The Friends of the Van Alstyne Public Library invite you to attend their annual used book sale August 27 – 29 at the Van Alstyne Community Center.  Thursday evening is “Friends Preview Night” from 7-9 p.m.  Only Friends members are admitted to this fun evening of books and delicious snacks.  Memberships are available at the door.

Local author Debbie Reece will be present on Thursday evening for a book signing of her children’s book The Christmas Pumpkin.  Ms. Reece, a resident of Howe, was inspired by her 5-year-old son Matthew to write the story of a pumpkin that never turns orange.  The book is beautifully illustrated by Ron Head, an artist who lives in the Van Alstyne area.

Visit the Friends book sale on Thursday evening to meet Debbie Reece, purchase an autographed copy of her book, enjoy snacks provided by the Friends, and look for other book bargains on the opening night of the sale.

On Friday, the book sale is open for everyone, from 9-5:00.  On Saturday, the sale will close at 3:00 p.m.   There will be current best sellers, older titles, many VHS titles and lots of audiocassettes.  Come early before all those bargains disappear.

All proceeds from the sale go to the Friends of the Library in support of library programs.  The Friends have paid for the library expansion, helped to purchase new materials each year, contributed to the improvement of Internet connections, and supported many other library activities.  All members are urged to attend their regular business meetings at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of every month.  Meetings are at the Van Alstyne Library.

Parents, don’t forget fall children’s programs begin on September 2.  Preschool story times will be on Wednesday mornings at 10:15.  This year there will be two after school reading programs.

Blanca Scroggins will provide a bilingual Reading Circle on Tuesday afternoons at 4:00 beginning on September 8, for children in grades k-2.

Juanita Hazelton will moderate a Bluebonnet Book Discussion Club on Monday afternoons at 4:00, for children in grades 3-6.  The book discussion group will begin on September 21.

The first book to be discussed will be Piper Reed, Navy Brat.
