One of Sherman's most famous landmarks for more than a half century at the American Legion Post 29 parking lot along Sam Rayburn Freeway, the F86L Sabrejet will soon become a permanent static display at North Texas Regional Airport-Perrin Field. The North American-built F-86L serial number 51-6144 returned "home" to former Perrin Air Force Base where it was used to train fighter pilots for action the Korean War.
A banner is erected on Grayson Drive in the median island west of the entrance to Perrin Field to mark the static display location.

The Fighter interceptor jet will welcome everyone who enters the airport, displayed in an elevated "take-off" attitude east of Perrin Field's WWII checker board water tower.
On December 21, 2007, the F-86L was returned to Perrin Field from Sherman. It was part of Perrin Air Force Base's jet fleet back in the mid 1950's.

This photo shows the Sabrejet with all of the old rag-like paint removed, major structural repairs, and now ready for re-painting to meet United States Air Force standards.
The delay in displaying the jet was due to the condition of the F86L Sabrejet. Critically needed and extensive corrosion control, repair of severe fuselage, wings and tail section damage. The overall gross damage was due to a half century up on a pedestal minus periodic corrosion control treatments.
The expected date for the F86L to be placed on an elevated pipe in a flying position should be around September 2009. A new paint job with all of the authorized insignias affixed will present a view of a piece of Perrin Field and Perrin Air Force Base's legacy as it moved into the jet age.
