Thanks to Michelle Tarlton and Sharon Hayes for the excellent job they have done with the children’s program for the past two weeks. The next preschool story time will be Wednesday June 17. During the Summer Reading Program, preschool story time will meet on Wednesdays only, but parents have a choice of 10:15 or 11:15 a.m. Parents may register at the library now for whichever session they want to attend. Maximum number at each session will be 45, so register early.
The Tuesday story time that starts on June 2 is a bilingual program presented by Blanca Scroggins. This program will begin at 11:15 a.m. We ask that participants register early for this program so we have an idea of how many to expect.. The program will meet each Tuesday in June only.
Pick up a Summer Reading Program calendar at the library now. It includes dates for the preschool story times, the bilingual story times, and some special programs. Bethany Lewis will be moderating a Bluebonnet Book Discussion Club on Tuesday mornings at 10:15 for children in grades 3 - 5. There will be a sign up sheet at the circulation desk. This program will also meet only in June. Jeff Lee, magician and comedian will kick off our summer program on June 11 at 2:00 p.m. Children, you need to bring your fathers to the Texas Parks & Wildlife angler education program on June 18 at 2:00 p.m. Expect this program to last about 1 ½ hours as children and parents learn about fishing, knots and lures, and get the opportunity to learn to cast.
In July, Reader’s Theater for grades 3 – 6 will take the place of the Bluebonnet Book Discussion Club. Children will read skits dealing with
Sherman Theatrics Traveling Children’s Players will perform at the Van Alstyne Library on Thursday evening July 16, at 7:00 p.m. Those of you who have enjoyed their performances in the past know to expect a special creative treat.
The finale for the Summer Reading Program will be an appearance from the Creature Teacher on Monday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m. Children enjoyed the opportunity to see different kinds of animals last year and we expect a great show again this year.
We are blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers, not just in the children’s programs but in other parts of the library. Joyce Kislack and Jacquie Penning shelve the hundreds of books that are checked out each week. The Teen Council keeps the children’s books shelved. Several community service workers are completing an inventory of the book collection. We still need volunteers to work with the local history collection and to help plan programs for our older citizens.
Ten viewers enjoyed our presentation of the movie, The Secret of the Bees, from the book by that title, by Sue Monk Kidd on Thursday May 21. Several were visitors from Meadowbrook. The next Books into Movies selection, from the book Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks, will be shown on Thursday June 18 at 1:30 p.m.
