Do you have a new 911 address? Remember to change your records at the Van Alstyne Public Library. Starting this week, no books or computers will be checked out until your new 911 address has been entered in our data base. If your mailing address has not changed, we still need to update your physical address.
There will be two more sessions in the Basic Computer classes, May 14 and 21. The May 14 class will meet at 5:00 p.m. instead of 6:00. The final class on May 21 will meet at the regular 6:00 time. The next free computer class will begin in September.
The Van Alstyne Public Library invites you to enjoy Thursday @ the Movies, a series of books made into movies. The program begins at 1:30 on the third Thursday of each month. Pick up a flyer in the library for the titles in the series. Bring your own coke or tea and the library will provide the popcorn. The movie for March 21 comes from a popular book by Sue Kidd Monk titled Secret of the Bees.
From the Desk of Barbara Washington, Children’s Assistant: Celebrations were in order at the library beginning with Cinco de Mayo! Thanks to Blanca Scroggins, story time, last week, was filled with learning and lots of fun. Blanca reviewed counting from one to ten in English, then taught the children the Spanish version. She read the big book, "Fiesta", and other books sharing Spanish words for numbers as well as colors. Another huge "thank you" goes to Claire Simmons for the wonderful parrott pinata she brought for the children to break after their story time. Candy and treats were flying in the library...and so were the kids. The attendance for both days was 72. Thanks again to Blanca and Claire for creating such an exciting way to learn about traditions from Mexico.
Summer Programs: Blanca Scroggins will be providing a bilingual story time every Tuesday in June at 11:15, so mark your calendars. Preschool story time will not meet on Tuesdays during the summer. On Wednesdays, we will have two regular story times. The first one will be at 10:15, followed by an 11:15 event. The seating will be limited to the first 45 participants (including parents). If you miss the first story time, you may attend the 11:15 event. Be sure to arrive at 10:00 if you desire the first story time.
We will be featuring Jeff Lee, a well known magician, for a return performance to help us kick off our summer reading program. He will perform for us on Thursday, June 11th at 2:00 at the library. You won't want to miss this talented performer. We will also have door prizes at this event.
Jerry Hamon will present a junior angler's class in June as well, so all of you young and young at heart fishermen will want to attend this fun family time.
Ringling Brothers has graciously agreed to send in the clowns for us again this year. Nancy Hall will also be back for "Art Camp". The Creature Teacher will be on hand in July for some creepy, crawly fun times. As you can see, there will be lots to do this summer at the Library.
Summer calendars will be going home with elementary school children in Van Alstyne and Anna, or you may stop by the library. Look for them soon!
