Tri-County Senior Nutrition Project, Inc. participates in the national "March For Meals" program and enlists the help of civic leaders to draw attention to the need for volunteers to deliver meals for SNAP Centers.
Bonham Mayor Roy Floyd, Whitewright Mayor Bill Goodson, Sherman Mayor Bill Magers and Denison Mayor Robert Brady participated in 2008 and were eager to assist again in 2009.
"I do this one day a year to publicize this program," Mayor Floyd explained between deliveries in Bonham, "but my admiration goes out to the people who are delivering these meals every day to our residents that would have no other way to receive nutritious meals. Sometimes you forget how many people are out there that need a little assistance, like a warm meal and a friendly 'God bless you.' Often you just don't see them because they don't get out much anymore."
Bonham SNAP Center delivers 138 meals six days a week, in addition to feeding the 20 or so that are able to stop by the SNAP Center for a healthy meal. The staff at Bonham SNAP Center is hopeful for more funding that would allow them to prepare and deliver meals seven days a week, but they are also grateful for volunteers that get these nutritious meals to the people that need them most.
Volunteers from Northside Church of Christ, First Presbyterian Church of Bonham, Assembly of God and the staff of Dr. Eve Gerome provide a valuable service, along with individuals that heed the call of their neighbors. One volunteer drives in from the Boyd Community three times a week to deliver meals, while another volunteer drives in from Windom five days a week to deliver meals on a 24-mile route.
If the staff at Bonham Snap Center is this grateful for caring volunteers that make sure these meals get delivered, just imagine how the recipients look forward to that knock on the door.
