"Small Business Wellness Check" is a new program developed
by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Grayson County College to help business owners assess the strengths and weaknesses of their business operation. Trained and certified counselors will work with small business owners throughout the process. If problems are identified, free one-on-one counseling will be provided to find solutions which can help strengthen the business operation.

According to SBDC Director Dr. Karen Stidham, "There is little argument that small businesses create the bulk of new jobs in
America and thus it is vitally important that small businesses not
only survive but thrive. Current economic conditions make it
imperative that small business owners run a tight ship, by making
wise and informed business decisions, if they hope to remain
profitable. Unlike large businesses, small businesses can generally
adapt to changing conditions very quickly.  However, the challenge
for most small business owners is identifying specific changes that
will be most helpful."

In addition to the wellness check, other services available at the SBDC include long range business and market planning and business research. SBDC counselors have access to databases which can generate lists of potential customers or competitors in a particular market area or industry.

If the wellness check indicates working capital is needed for expansion or day to day operations counselors can also guide the client through the maze of business lending. Information is available on various loan programs, lenders and application procedures and requirements.

Specialty counseling is available in the areas of government contracting opportunities, risk management, enterprise excellence (manufacturing), technology assistance and international trade. Counseling in these areas is free of charge to the client, and is also available in Spanish.

The Grayson SBDC is funded by the Small Business Administration, GCC and the State of Texas. Counseling is confidential and available by appointment at the GCC locations in Denison, Bonham and Van Alstyne. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 903-463-8787 during business hours.
