LET’S PLAY BALL!! The Texas A&M-Commerce Lions open their 2003 season Saturday when they face the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils.

The Lions look to bounce back from last season’s 2-8 overall record that had them 2-6 in all Lone Star Conference play and 1-5 in the LSC South.  The Boll Weevils are 0-1 on the young season, opening last Saturday at Division I-AA Southeastern Louisiana. UAM held a fourth quarter lead on the ressurected SLU squad, but lost in SLU’s first game in 17 years 22-17.

The calling card for the A&M-Commerce Lions for 2003 is defense, led by one of the most talented linebacking corps in NCAA Division II football. LB John Paul Mulligan (6-2, 250, Sr-3L, Arlington/Lamar), a 2001 first-team All-Lone Star Conference South performer, returns after obtaining a hardship redshirt from a knee injury last year. He’s averaged over seven tackles a game since the start of his sophomore season. LB Tay Weatherspoon (6-0, 240, Jr-1L, Jasper) was an honorable mention All-LSC South selection in 2001 and the Lions welcome LB Jared Williams (6-2, 240, Jr-Tr, Bridge City) who was a honorable mention All-Southland Conference pick at Division I-AA Stephen F. Austin in 2001. The defensive line is anchored by Daktronics All-West Region second-teamer DE Derrick Crawford (6-4, 295, Sr-2L, Avon Park, Fla.) who led the team with 11 tackles for losses last season and five quarterback sacks. Returning to the d-line is NT Terrance Smith (6-2, 275, So-1L, Garland) who was the Lions defensive line MVP in 2001.

Offensively, A&M-Commerce returns RB Joel Tudman (6-0, 220, Sr-2L, Amarillo/Palo Duro) who was the team’s second-leading rusher last season, despite playing only four games before a season-ending knee injury. The powerful Tudman averages 3.9 yards a carry. Also returning is QB Justin Simons (6-0, 190, Sr-2L, Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River) who ranked ninth in the LSC in passing a season ago with 1,372 yards.

The Lion special teams feature P Chris Miller (6-3, 200, Jr-1L, Plano) who led the LSC and ranked 12th nationally in punting with a 40.9 yard average.

The Boll Weevils of coach Gregg Ricono played an strong game at Southeastern Louisiana with a bad snap on a punt in the rain spoiling what looked to be an upset.  The Weevils were led offensively by QB Cory Allred (5-11, 175, Jr-JC, Lancaster, Calif.) who completed 16-of-31 passes for 250 yards with two touchdown and no interceptions.

His favorite target was TE Devon Stewart (6-1, 220, Sr-1L, Lancaster, Calif.) who hauled in eight passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, UAM had a trio of players lead the tackle chart as WS Dewayne Perkins (5-10, 180, Fr-HS, Bossier City, La.), FS Demathus Ledet (5-10, 175, So.) and CB Daniel Henderson (5-11, 190, Sr-3L, Ashdown, Ark.) all chalked up 10 stops.

UAM rolled up 319 total yards of offense, while holding SLU to 256 yards.

THE FIELD BOSS Beginning his fifth season as the Lions head coach, Eddie Brister has a 18-25 record. Brister is just the fourth head coach of the Lions in the last 48 years.  Before arriving at A&M-Commerce, Brister spent seven years as the offensive coordinator at NCAA Division I-AA Stephen F. Austin State University, in the Southland Football League. He helped SFA to a pair of I-AA playoff appearances, including a semifinal berth in 1995. During his tenure, the Lumberjacks were ranked in the I-AA Top 25 every week for five years.

Prior to SFA, Brister was the head coach at Willowridge High School in Fort Bend, where he posted a 37-7-1 record with two state quarterfinal berths.

A 1972 graduate of Austin College, Brister earned his master’s from A&M Commerce in 1975 and coached at Sherman, Electra, Lewisville, Allen and Howe before going to Willowridge.

THE SERIES This is the first-ever meeting between the Lions and the Boll Weevils.

SEASON OPENERS The Lions have good record in season openers with a 47-36-2 (.565) record in openers dating back to 1914. A&M-Commerce is 2-2 in the opener in the Eddie Brister era, 1-1 in Commerce. The Lions have a 24-11-2 (.676) record in Commerce to open the season and 15-7-1 (.674) in curtain raisers at Memorial Stadium. The Lions lost their season opener last year to Southern Arkansas 27-23 in Commerce after the original first game against Southwestern Assemblies of God was cancelled by SAGU. The Lions are 4-4 against teams from Arkansas in the season opener.

MEMORIAL STADIUM The Lions are tough in defending the turf at Memorial Stadium in Commerce. The stadium is hosting it’s 53rd season of football, is dedicated to the 78 former students who died in World War II. The Lions hold a 175-83-8 (.673) record at Memorial Stadium, were 36-16 (.792) at home in the 1990’s and are 9-5 (.643) in the 2000’s.

The Stadium has been the site of several big Lions wins, including the 1972 NAIA National Championship victory over Carson-Newman (Tenn.) 21-18, and a thrilling last-second 36-35 Lone Star Conference Championship win over Stephen F. Austin in 1969.

TOUGH SCHEDULE The Lions have a strong schedule again in 2003. Three of the 11 Lion opponents open the season in the AFCA Division II Top 25 with Texas A&M-Kingsville fifth, Southern Arkansas 20th and Abilene Christian 23rd. Four more received votes in the first two polls this year (Midwestern State, Central Oklahoma, East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma).

WE MISSED YOU The Lions return several key players that either missed or did not play half of the season in 2002. Among those folks who could make an impact on 2003 are RB Joel Tudman (injured in fourth game, did not return), LB John Paul Mulligan (injured in second game, did not return, earned medical hardship), LB Tay Weatherspoon (did not play) and NT Terrance Smith (did not play).

MIGHTY MULLIGAN LB John Paul Mulligan (6-3, 250, Sr-3L, Arlington/Lamar) is among the top linebackers in the country and was selected a 2002 preseason All-American by D2Football.com. He was also chosen as preseason All-West Region by the website last year before being felled by a knee injury in the second game. He is back for his final season as a Lion, which could be his strongest as well. A first-team All-Lone Star Conference South performer in 2001, Mulligan led the Lions with 20 tackles when he went down in game two. He also had one fumble recovery. In 2001, he led the Lions in tackles and was third on the team as a sophomore. For his career, Mulligan has collected 167 total tackles (only seven as a freshman), with an average of 5.4 per game. His tackle average from his sophomore year on is 7.3 per game.

CRUNCHIN’ CRAWFORD DE Derrick Crawford (6-4, 295, Sr-1L, Avon Park, Fla.) is out to make his mark for his senior season. A second-team All-Lone Star Conference South selection last year, Crawford led the Lions in 2003 with 11 tackles for loses (-36 yards) and five quarterback sacks (-21 yards) despite playing most of the time at defensive tackle. Also named second-team Daktronics All-West Region last year, he was fourth on the team in total tackles with 64 stops. He averages 4.75 tackles a game for his career.

SIMONS COLLECTS THE YARDS QB Justin Simons (6-0, 190, Sr-2L, Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River) returns for his third season as the Lion signal caller. He ranked ninth among LSC passers by completing 111-of-197 passes (.563) for 1,372 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He averaged 137.2 yards a game and tallied a 122.2 efficiency rating. Simons (pronounced sihm-uhns) has completed 184-of-354 passes (.520) for his career at A&M-C for 2,300 yards with 12 TDs and 16 interceptions.

TALENTED TUDMAN RB Joel Tudman (6-0, 220, Sr-2L, Amarillo/Palo Duro) looks to make up ground from last season. Tudman rushed for 318 yards on 82 carries (3.9 per carry) when he suffered a season-ending knee injury against Southeastern Oklahoma in the fourth game of the year. He still finished as the second-leading rusher for the Lions.  Tudman recorded 124 yards at Central Oklahoma and 90 yards early in the fourth quarter against Southeastern when he went down. After surgery last fall, Tudman came back in the spring to run track for the Lions and led the team in the 100 meters, placing fourth at the LSC Championships with a windy 10.59.

POWERFUL PUNTER The only first-team All-Lone Star Conference South performer returning to the Lions from 2002, P Chris Miller (6-3, 200, Sr-1L, Plano) is one of the key weapons in the Lion arsenal. Miller led the Lone Star Conference and was 12th in NCAA Division II with a 40.9 yard punting average after hitting 56 punts for 2,288 yards. His long of the season was 59 yards with 10 punts inside the 20 and eight punts better than 50 yards. A rocket launcher in the U.S. Army for three years before going into private business then returning to college, Miller played the 1996 season at Midwestern State (with a 41.7 average).

NEW FACES The Lions have several newcomers for the 2003 season (56 reported for the start of fall camp). Among the more notable are LB Jared Williams (6-2, 240, Jr-Tr, Bridge City) who redshirted with the Lions in 2002 after earning second-team All-Southland Conference honors as the number two tackler at Stephen F. Austin in 2001. RB Malcolm Isom (5-8, 185, So-Tr, Newton) played at New Hampshire last year and averaged 9.4 yards a carry before being felled by a knee injury. OG Ryan Graves (6-1, 310, So-Tr, Waco) was an honorable mention All-Southland player last year at Southwest Texas (now Texas State), earning SWT’s Outstanding Freshman of the Year honors. LB Justin Thomas (6-1, 240, Sr-Tr, Spencer, Okla.) came to the Lions after four years at Notre Dame. He played in all 13 games for the Fighting Irish, including the Gator Bowl. The honorable mention USA Today High School All-American did not see action in his sophomore season and has one season of eligibility. TE John Wingate (6-4, 245, Jr-Tr, Houston/Elsik) redshirted last season at Iowa State. He was an all-conference performer at Tyler JC.

QUOTING EDDIE BRISTER

On Opening the Season: "We have been waiting for this game since last year. We feel we have something to prove and we’re excited about playing."

On the Lions: "We’ve had our moments in fall camp. The defense is ahead of the curve and our offense is coming along. We’ll be ready Saturday."

On Arkansas-Monticello: "They are a much improved football team from last year. Their recruiting helped both from transfers and incoming freshmen and it showed last week. They opened with a tough opponent that no one really knew about and nearly beat ‘em. "

On the Boll Weevil Offense: "Arkansas-Monticello has good receivers and an outstanding quarterback. (QB) Cory Allred is an athlete and did a great job in the opener."

On the Boll Weevil Defense: "The Boll Weevils are quick and athletic defensively. They’ve got a strong secondary. (CB) Daniel Henderson is very good and a great cover man."

On the Lion Fans: "Our fans are great. They hung in there with us last season and we appreciate it. We want everyone to come out and watch this club play."
