New Mexico weekly fishing report -- December 23

Dec. 23, 2008 - This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

NORTHEAST AREA 

CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.   
EAGLE NEST LAKE: As of Monday there was a thin layer of ice on the lake which was unsafe for fishing. For updated conditions call the park office at 575-377-1534.
LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: As of Monday Lake Maloya was iced over but considered unsafe for ice fishing. We had no reports from Lake Alice. For updated conditions contact the state park office at 575-445-5697.
MONASTERY LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.     
PECOS RIVER: Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 60cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, small bead head nymphs and worms.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery was 56cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using streamers, salmon eggs and copper john barrs.
RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 428cfs. Trout fishing was slow but there were a few fish taken by anglers using salmon eggs and streamers.  We had no reports on other species.  
SHUREE PONDS: We had no reports from anglers this week. The ponds close for the season December 31.                
STORRIE LAKE: As of Monday there was a thin layer of ice on the lake which was unsafe for fishing. For updated conditions call the park office at 505-425-7278.
UTE LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light. 
 

NORTHWEST AREA 

ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.  
ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Trout fishing was fair on the Albuquerque, Bernalillo and Belen drains. Best baits were salmon eggs and corn.
BLUEWATER LAKE:  As of Monday there was a thin layer of ice on the lake which was unsafe for fishing. Call the state park office at 505-876-2391 for updated conditions.
CHAMA RIVER:  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 391cfs and 279cfs respectively. Fishing pressure was very light and we had no reports from anglers this week.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.  Fishing pressure was very light.      
EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.       
FARMINGTON LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and power bait. We had no reports on other species.   
FENTON LAKE: As of Monday the lake was still closed to fishing due to thin ice conditions. For updated ice conditions, contact the park office at 575-829-3630.
HERON LAKE: Bank fishing was fair using roe sacs and salmon eggs for rainbow trout and small lake trout. There was some ice forming around the edges of the lake.
JACKSON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. 

JEMEZ WATERS:  Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 27cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was slow-to-fair using copper john barrs and salmon eggs. Fishing on the East Fork and Cebolla was slow.
MANZANO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using cheese baits and power bait.  
MCGAFFEY LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.       
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continued to be very light.
RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers.  
SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 504cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair using small streamers, dead chickens, parachute adams, emergers, red annelids and leeches. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using Kastmasters, jerk baits, streamers and copper john barrs.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.    
TINGLEY BEACH: Trout fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using salmon peach and cheese power baits, Pistol Petes and leech patterns. At the Catch and Release Pond, fishing was good using chamois leeches, egg patterns, zebra midges and streamers. 
 

SOUTHWEST AREA 

BEAR CANYON: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and power bait.       
BILL EVANS LAKE: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, corn and power bait. A few fish were also taken on spinners.     
BURN LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continued to be very light.  
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using spoons and jigs for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair using worms and jigs in 6-to-20 feet of water. Fishing for catfish was slow-to-fair using cut bait, minnows and liver. We had no reports on other species.  
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs, salmon egg/corn combinations and Pistol Petes.      
GILA RIVER: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 83cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
GLENWOOD POND: Fishing was good using salmon eggs.
LAKE ROBERTS: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, power bait and worms.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.       
QUEMADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.  
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.                  
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 0cfs.  Fishing was slow.
 

SOUTHEAST AREA 

BATAAN LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Trout fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.
BOTTOMLESS LAKES: Trout fishing at the Devil’s Inkwell and at Cottonwood was good using power bait, spinners and salmon eggs. 
BRANTLEY LAKE:  Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.  This is a good place to work on bass fishing techniques over the winter months.
CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.     
GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and power bait.
JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and power bait.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 15cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms, home made dough baits and power bait.
PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and power bait.       
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow near Hollywood on Monday was 8.5cfs. Trout fishing was slow. A few fish were taken by anglers using salmon eggs and small nymphs.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was slow for most this past week but a few anglers over the weekend caught several bass. They were using sweet beavers and working in 8-to-12 feet of water. The surface temp at the time was 40 degrees. We had no reports on other species.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
