Michael Monticino named interim dean of the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies

DENTON (UNT), Texas — Dr. Michael Monticino has been appointed interim dean of the University of North Texas Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies effective Jan. 1.  

Monticino is associate dean for administrative affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor in the Department of Mathematics and Institute for Applied Science. He will replace Dr. Sandra Terrell, who has been named vice provost for academic outreach effective Jan. 1. A national search to name a permanent graduate school dean is under way. 

“Dr. Monticino’s experience in both academic administration and in business consulting will be especially useful to UNT during this time of growth and transition,” said Dr. Wendy K. Wilkins, provost and vice president for academic affairs, who announced the appointment. “His expertise will be beneficial to UNT as the university continues to develop its student-centered focus at the same time it greatly increases the scope and success of its research programs.”   

Monticino joined the UNT faculty in 1990, and he was appointed associate dean for administrative affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences in 2004. He also is an adjunct professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. 

Monticino has worked with the U.S. Navy, ABC TV, Southwest Airlines, DFW Airport, the Institute for Defense Analysis and IBM. His areas of expertise are statistical analysis, probability models, operations research and environmental modeling. 

Monticino was founding president of the Mathematical Association of America Special Interest Group for Business Industry and Government, a link between business, industry and government mathematicians, academic mathematicians and mathematics students. He has been active in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Visiting Lecturer Program, which promotes career opportunities for students, academics and others with analytical skills and applied mathematics skills.

Prior to joining UNT, Dr. Monticino was an associate with Daniel H. Wagner Associates, Inc.  a mathematical and computer science consulting firm.

Monticino earned a bachelor’s degree with high honors and a doctoral degree in mathematics at the University of Miami, Miami, Fla.
