SHERMAN – The Austin College softball team split its evening doubleheader with visiting Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Hendrix College, coming from behind to take a 6-5 victory in game one and falling 6-1 in game two.

Hendrix jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second in game one, with McKinzie Fruchtl tripling to get things started and then coming home on an infield hit by Francis Goodrich.  Hanna Braden singled to score Heather Stroud, and Christina Byler came home on a fielding error to make it a three run lead.

Austin College got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Stefanie Faith belted a homer to dead center to make it 3-1.  Two innings later the ’Roos jumped into the lead with a four run inning to go ahead 5-3 after four.  Bobbi Schulle scored on a Carolyn Stone single, Stone scoring on a Brittany Gaertner single, Abbey Hayes doubling home Brooke Delozier, and the final run came when Laci Hart drove in Gaertner.

The Warriors quickly got the two runs back and knotted things up at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, with Meagan Alban driving in Fruchtl and Stroud scoring on a wild pitch.  However, the game would not stay tied for long, as Faith singled to score Kali Gossett and put the ’Roos up 6-5.  The ’Roos would hold Hendrix scoreless in the seventh to seal the win.

Faith finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a homer, and Schulle and Hayes each had two hits in the win.  Gaertner threw a complete game, giving up five runs, two of which were unearned, on 12 hits.

Braden and Fruchtl each went 3-for-4 for the Warriors, and Jaclyn Herrera took the loss after surrendering six runs on 12 hits while striking out five batters.

In game two, the Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Stroud singled to score Ellen Burr and Sara Hunter scored on a wild pitch.  Two more runs came home in the second when Braden and Hunter each singled home runs to make it 4-0.

Braden doubled and scored in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-0 game, but the ’Roos finally managed to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Schulle scored on a throwing error after stealing third to make it 5-1.

That’s as close as the ’Roos would get though, as Hendrix added one more run in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-1 final.

Braden, Burr and Stroud each collected three hits as the Warriors had 16 hits as a team.  Herrera surrendered one unearned run on two hits while striking out five and walking five to earn the win.

Stone and Delozier got the only two hits for the ’Roos, while Ashley Johnson gave up six runs, five of which were earned.  Johnson struck out two batters and walked two.

Austin College and Hendrix will face off in another doubleheader tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Old Settlers Park.
