Bonham -- A late rally by Frisco Liberty undermined a career performance by Bonham senior post, Nick Weissert, Friday night. Weissert had 23 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, but a 13-2 run in the last three minutes of the game gave Liberty a 49-45 win on the road.
Bonham jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Aaron Mosley knocked down a three-point shot and Weissert hit a pair of baskets in the paint. Myran Roundtree took a steal in for two points, T.J. King connected from close range and Weissert dropped in two points on a reverse lay-up.
Bonham dominated the opening period and the Warriors led 13-5 at the first buzzer, but Liberty had closed to within 20-16 at the break.
Malcolm Hill had the hot hand in the third period and his back-to-back buckets tied the contest, 20-20. Weissert hustled down the floor for a lay-up and Roundtree rang up two points on a breakaway, but the teams were all knotted up at 25-25 going into the final frame.
Weissert brought down an offensive rebound and went back up for two points to start the fourth quarter. Michael Johnson came up with a steal and took it coast-to-coast for a 29-25 Bonham lead. The Warriors got a stop on defense and went back inside to Weissert at the other end. The Bonham post put up two points, stretching the lead to 31-25.
Liberty battled back to tie the game, 33-33. Once more the Warriors looked to Weissert and he responded with a fade-away jumper despite being fouled. The free throw was good, giving Bonham a 36-33 advantage. Liberty answered with a triple by Andreas Gringbord the tied the game. Roundtree game Bonham a one-point lead with a free throw and Weissert connected again, this time on a turn-around jump shot from the low post, and the Warriors were up 39-36.
Liberty turned the ball over and Weissert went banked in two points for a 41-36 lead. Ethan Porter grabbed a steal and raced in for a lay-up that pushed the score to 43-36. Johnson would get Bonham's final basket, but a 13-2 run by Liberty gave the visitors a 49-44 win.
Gringbord hit another trey, Nick Killian connected from the baseline and Hill came up with a steal and hit a difficult off-balance shot in the lane. It was a pair of free throws by Hill with 44 seconds on the clock that iced the game.
Liberty hit 12-of-17 shots from the charity stripe and Bonham went 6-of-13.
With the win, Liberty moves to 4-3 in District 9-3A and the loss drops Bonham to 2-5.
Nick Weissert led all scorers with 23 points, Myran Roundtree, Ethan Porter and Michael Johnson all finished with five points apiece, Aaron Mosley had three points and Dylan Hill dropped on two points.
Malcolm Hill knocked down 19 points to lead Liberty and teammate Andreas Gringbord had 11 points.
