Summertime is finally here, and at story time at the Van Alstyne Library, we celebrated. Kids listed fun things they like to do in June, July, and August –swimming, riding bikes, going to the park, and going barefoot! Barbara Washington read the book Summer.
Afterwards, everyone went outside to learn how to work together to bounce toy insects up in the air with a parachute. Children drew pictures of butterflies and flowers on the sidewalk with chalk.

Summer reading activities at the Van Alstyne Library begin on Thursday, June 5. Boopsie the Clown will be here at 2:00 for the Kickoff of the Texas Reading Club Jubilee. Details of the reading activities will be available at the program. Arrive early to fill out enrollment cards and start working toward your personal reading goals.

Preschool story time begins on Tuesday June 10 at 10:15, with City Manager Bill Herrington making a guest appearance at the library, reading Hooray for Father’s Day. On Wednesday June 11, Merrill Hazelton will make a guest appearance telling the story “The Day Pa Shot the Tractor” and reading Hooray for Father’s Day.
On Thursday June 12, the Southwest Dairy Farmers will bring their exhibit to the library parking lot at 2:00. This is sure to be a popular event.
These are only a few of the exciting events Barbara Washington has lined up for the next seven weeks. Activities range from clowns to puppets, from banjo players to chess. Pick up a calendar with June and July events at the library.
The children’s department will be co-sponsoring the Chess Club this summer, on Tuesday at 2:00. If you are already a member of the Chess Club, or if you would like to be a member, plan to spend some quiet board time beginning at 2 p.m. in the library.
For adults this summer, the library is sponsoring a photo contest. Many historical structures around Van Alstyne are disappearing as the town grows. Your photos can help preserve them for the future. Entries will be on display in the library from July 28-August 2. The library is designing a local history web page and will be featuring photos of local landmarks. Will your photo be one of them? Details of the contest will be available at the library on Monday, June 7.
