CITY OF HAWK COVE, TEXAS, May 30, 2008— Allen Lambright, USDA Rural Development Area Director, today presented ceremonial checks to the City of Hawk Cove, which has been selected to receive $2,030,000 through the agency’s Community Facilities Grant Program and the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Programs. The city has been selected to receive federal assistance for three separate projects including the purchase of a police car, the construction of a carport to house emergency service vehicles and the construction of a sewer plant.
“This funding will assist the City of Hawk Cove with providing valuable resources to help make the environment cleaner and protect the public health for local residents,” said Scooter Brockette, USDA Rural Development Acting State Director.

In Fiscal Year 2007, a total of $882,000 in Community Facility Grants was obligated in Texas. Funds are used to enhance the quality of life for residents of rural areas by providing the means for construction, expansion, or enhancement of community facilities, telecommunication and distance education programs, and water and waste disposal systems. These programs are important because they supply a number of growth opportunities to communities with improved utility facilities, increased job availability, and technology and educational resources.
In Fiscal Year 2007, $133.9 million of loan and grant assistance was distributed throughout rural Texas to 279,702 households. The USDA Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Program is designed to bring fresh, clean drinking water and sanitary, environmentally sound sewage facilities to rural America’s 53 million residents. Loans and grants are available to rural communities with fewer than 10,000 residents. Public bodies, corporations operating on a non-profit basis, and Indian tribes, that are unable to obtain credit from other sources at reasonable rates and terms, are eligible for assistance.
USDA Rural Development was created in 1994 to serve Texas’ more than 3.6 million rural residents. For further information regarding USDA Rural Development Programs, contact the McKinney Local Office at (972) 542-0081, Extension 4, or visit our website at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/tx/.
