The Southeastern volleyball team opened their spring non-championship schedule with a win at the Oklahoma City University Spring Tournament on Saturday.
The Savage Storm defeated Seward County Community College in pool play. Then Southeastern downed Oklahoma City University (OCU) and Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in bracket play before topping the OCU Stars in the championship.
Head Coach Skip Freeman was encouraged by the team's play against solid competition.
"Southwestern defeated us in the fall and OCU won 34 matches this past season and advanced to the NAIA regional semi-finals," said Freeman. "The ladies responded very well to the offensive changes we are implementing. I think they will really thrive in our new system."
Freeman said the team has three more tournaments in the coming weeks.
"In April, we are playing at Southwestern, Texas Women's and University of Texas-Dallas," continued Freeman. "I look for us to continue to grow in this new system as prepare we for the fall."
NCAA Bylaws allow member volleyball teams to play four dates during the spring semester.
The Savage Storm open the 2008 season on August 29-30 at the second annual Texoma Challenge. Hosted at Bloomer Sullivan a year ago, the Texoma Challenge is a partnership with Lone Star Conference neighbor Texas A&M-Commerce with the host site alternating each year.
