AUSTIN – The 21 Texas public schools honored as No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education will be recognized at the Texas Association of School Administrators Midwinter Conference Jan. 28.
Also to be recognized are 26 Texas schools that have been nominated for 2007-2008 Blue Ribbon School honors.
The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes outstanding public and private schools that are either academically superior in their states or that demonstrate dramatic and consistent gains in student achievement.
To be nominated for the honor, schools must either:
• Have 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds who show dramatic improvement in performance on state tests over the previous three years in reading or English language arts and mathematics;
or
• Have students, regardless of demographics, achieve in the top 10 percent on state tests in reading or English language arts and mathematics.
In addition, Blue Ribbon Schools must meet federal Adequate Yearly Progress standards in reading or English language arts and mathematics, must not be identified as "persistently dangerous," and must be in compliance with other federal education requirements.
Robert Scott, commissioner of education, said the Blue Ribbon Schools and nominees for next year’s awards represent just a few of the outstanding schools in Texas.
"Blue Ribbon Schools are outstanding examples of student achievement and educator excellence," Scott said. "I applaud the hard work and dedication it took for these schools to attain such an important honor."
Winners of the Blue Ribbon Schools designation for 2007-2008 will be announced in the fall by the U.S. Department of Education.
A list of Texas public schools named 2007 NCLB-Blue Ribbon Schools and a separate list of nominees for 2007-2008 are attached.
