This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week 

Elephant Butte : June 17, Michael Whitney of Rio Rancho caught a 4.5-pound largemouth bass while fishing with live bait.

Cochiti Lake : June 19, Bob Christner of Albuquerque caught a 24-inch northern pike. He was fishing from the bank and using a gold and black Panther Martin. June 20, Andy Hostetler of Albuquerque caught a 39-inch northern pike. He was using a bluegill colored DT6 crank bait. June 24, Ian Whitling of Albuquerque caught a 30-inch northern pike. He was using a crank bait in front of the dam. June 24, Jim Moore of Albuquerque caught a 28.5-inch northern pike while fishing with minnows near the boat ramp.

El Vado Lake: June 23, James Romero, 14, of Albuquerque caught a 22-inch brown. He was fishing on the south bank of the lake and using worms.

Ute Lake : June 24, Laura Elkins of Amarillo caught a 5.08-pound largemouth bass. She was using a   spinner bait.

NORTHEAST AREA  

CANJILON LAKES : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, power bait and spinners.

CHARETTE LAKES : Fishing continued to be very good using worms for perch. Fishing was good using grasshoppers, worms, salmon eggs, spinners and power bait for trout.

CIMARRON RIVER : Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 12cfs. Fishing was good using yellow sallies, may fly nymphs and small spinners for brown and rainbow trout.

CLAYTON LAKE : Daytime fishing slowed considerably this past week but anglers did very well fishing at night and under lights. They were using worms and catching walleye, catfish and trout. We had no reports on other species.

COCHITI LAKE : Fishing was very good for most anglers fishing with worms and minnows. They caught a variety of fish and a great number of small white bass. The fish were scattered and we had good reports from several areas of the lake. Fishing was good trolling crank baits for white bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and a few northern pike.

CONCHAS LAKE : Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good for anglers using Pop Rs, Ricos, senkos, tubes and crank baits. The best top water action was during the morning hours. Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using grubs, jigs tipped with minnows, crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. Fishing for bluegill was good for anglers using small wet flies, poppers, worms, minnows and small jigs. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using crank baits, grubs, minnows and top water lures. Fishing for catfish was fair using liver, night crawlers and cut bait.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.

EAGLE NEST LAKE : Trout fishing slowed for anglers fishing from the bank but action was still good for boaters. They did well trolling black and yellow Panther Martins and double whammies for a mix of rainbow trout and kokanee. Most of the fish caught were taken at depths of 12-to-22 feet.

HOPEWELL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE : Trout fishing continued to be good at both lakes this past week. Anglers did well using assorted power baits, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and a variety of flies including pheasant tail nymphs. There were several brood fish stocked in Lake Maloya and a few in Lake Alice last week that should provide anglers with some great action.

MAXWELL LAKES : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.

MCALLISTER LAKE : Trout fishing was slow. A few fish were taken by anglers using worms and power bait and fishing from the bank.

MONASTERY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn, Pistol Petes and spinners.

PECOS RIVER : As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 126cfs. Trout fishing was very good for anglers using copper john barrs, small spinners, night crawlers and worms. Anglers did well here and on the Mora catching a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.

RED RIVER : Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 99cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, copper john barrs, spinners and night crawlers.

RIO GRANDE : The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 558cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using Gulp eggs, copper john barrs, worms and spinners. Fishing for northern pike was fair for anglers using jerk baits and large bunny leeches.

SHUREE PONDS: Opens for fishing on July 1.

SPRINGER LAKE : Fishing was fair for anglers using spinners and minnows for small northern pike. Fishing was fair using worms and cut bait for catfish.

STORRIE LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, power bait and cheese for rainbow trout and worms and chicken liver for catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing during the early morning hours.

STUBBLEFIELD: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and spinners for walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

UTE LAKE : Fishing was fair using bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs in 25-to-40 feet of water for walleye. A few walleye were also taken by anglers trolling crank baits, casting top water lures and using jigs in the brush. Fishing was good using cut bait, liver, minnows and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was good using worms and minnows for bluegill. Fishing was slow-to-fair using top water lures, spinner baits, jerk baits, tubes and finesse worms for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, night crawlers and dough baits for catfish. Fishing was fair using top water lures, crank baits, spinners and minnows for white bass.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE : Fishing for walleye was fair-to-good for anglers using jointed shad raps, wally divers, jerk baits, grubs and spinner/night crawler combinations. The best reports again this week came from anglers fishing the upper end of the lake. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits and spinner rigs for brown trout. Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair-to-good using crank baits, tubes and jerk baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using worms for perch.

BLUEWATER LAKE : Fishing for tiger musky was good again this past week. Anglers did well using jerk baits, spinners, crank baits, power bait and night crawlers. Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait for catfish. Trout fishing was slow.

CHAMA RIVER : Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 289cfs and 768cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was fair using night crawlers and spinners for brown trout. A few rainbows were taken by anglers using salmon eggs and power bait. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

EL VADO LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good from the bank and from boats for anglers using power bait, worms, night crawlers and spinners. Anglers trolling for trout with spinner/corn combinations also caught a few kokanee.

FENTON LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using night crawlers in the early morning hours and green or yellow power baits during the day. A few trout were also taken on Pistol Petes and bead head wooly buggers.

HERON LAKE : Fishing for kokanee was fair-to-good this past week depending on who you talked to. Some anglers did well using kokanee killers and rainbow colored sockeye slammers tipped with corn. They were trolling at depths of 15- to-25 feet. Anglers trolling for kokanee also reported catching a few trout. Fishing from the bank was slow.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 18cfs. Trout fishing on the Guadalupe, Rio Las Vacas, Cebolla and San Antonio was good for anglers using copper john barrs, pheasant tails, royal wulffs, small tan stimulators and worms. A few trout were also taken by anglers using salmon eggs.

MANZANO LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE : Fishing was good using tubes, grubs, top water lures and crank baits for smallmouth bass. The best reports we received came from anglers fishing the San Juan arm near and above La Jara Canyon. Anglers trolling crank baits also reported catching a few northern pike. Crappie fishing was slow but there were a few taken by anglers fishing Francis Canyon and using 2 and 3 inch tubes and grubs. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers trolling kokanee killers and Arnies at 20-to-30 feet for kokanee. They were tipping their baits with corn and worms. A few trout were taken by anglers light line trolling jointed Rapalas and by others fishing from the bank and using worms and power bait. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE : The water level is low but the lake was recently stocked with rainbow trout. Give it a try.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN JUAN : Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,250cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using small parachute adams, WD40s, red annelids, dead chickens, San Juan worms and small bead head pheasant tail nymphs. Through the bait waters, fishing was fair-to-good using jerk baits, copper john barrs, wooly buggers, night crawlers, garlic cheese and power bait.

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12. Fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing in the catch and release pond was slow-to-fair for anglers using dead chickens, small streamers, small copper john barrs and Griffith 's gnats. Fishing in the youth and middle ponds was slow-to-fair using worms, hot dogs and dough bait for catfish.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON : We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using poppers and worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair using worms and dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BURN LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

CABALLO LAKE : Fishing slowed some but there were a few walleye and white bass taken by anglers trolling crank baits, spinner/minnow rigs and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. They were fishing on the east side of the lake. Fishing was fair using liver, night crawlers and Gulp worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE : Fishing was fair using crank baits, grubs and minnows for walleye. Most of the fish were taken in 10-to-18 feet of water. Fishing was fair-to-good using top water lures, crank baits and live bait for white bass. A few striped bass were taken by anglers using live bait, jigs and umbrella rigs at 15-to-28 feet of water. Fishing was slow-to-fair using top water lures, finesse worms, crank baits, brush hogs, salt craws, tubes and senkos for largemouth and smallmouth bass. crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using liver, shrimp, hot dogs and night crawlers late in the day and through the night time hours for catfish.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE : Fishing was slow for all species.

GILA RIVER : Water flow near Gila on Monday was 68cfs. Fishing on the forks was slow-to-fair for anglers using pheasant tail nymphs and small copper john barrs for trout.

LAKE ROBERTS : We had no reports from anglers this week.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was fair-to-good using grubs, crank baits and minnows for white bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

QUEMADO LAKE : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using bead head wooly buggers, worms, power bait and Pistol Petes. Fishing was fair using jerk baits, power baits and spinners for tiger musky.

RIO GRANDE : Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 1,540cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using grubs and spinners for white bass. Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. On the river below Caballo Lake , fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, night crawlers and grubs for walleye and white bass. Fishing was slow-to-fair using cut bait for catfish.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

BONITO LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn and spinners. Fishing was fair-to-good using corn for carp.

BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BRANTLEY LAKE : Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was slow.

JAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN : Fishing was slow. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers, liver and dough baits. We had no reports on other species.

OASIS PARK LAKE : The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete about June 30 of this year. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER : Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 103cfs. Fishing was slow. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and liver.

RIO BONITO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

RUIDOSO RIVER : Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 3.9cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE : Bass fishing slowed down some from the previous week but a few anglers managed to find some good smallmouth and largemouth. They were using top water lures, jerk baits, crank baits, tubes and senkos and fishing at depths of 4-to-18 feet. Anglers fishing for bass also reported catching a few good size crappie. A few more crappie were taken by anglers using minnows and jigs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using grubs, crank baits and tubes for walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using cut bait and liver.

SUMNER LAKE : Fishing slowed for both bass and walleye this past week. A few anglers managed to catch walleye while trolling deep off points and using crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. A few largemouth bass were taken by anglers using tubes and worms fished in heavy cover. A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers fishing deep off main lake points and using deep running crank baits and tubes. We had no reports on other species.
