This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
REMINDER TO ALL ANGLERS: New Mexico's license year is April 1 through March 31. You may obtain a license at one of the many license vendors around the state, at Department of Game and Fish offices in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Raton or Roswel. Rio Grande : This one's a little late but worth mentioning. May 26, Sean Scates, 11, of Roswell caught a 27-pound and a 25-pound flathead catfish. He was fishing with his dad on the river below Bosque Del Apache and was using cut bait strips.
Santa Rosa Lake : June 5, Art Lyons of Albuquerque caught a 6.6-pound smallmouth bass. He was fishing in 7 feet of water and using a brown gitzit.
Sumner Lake : June 8, Connie Vincent of Portales caught a 3-pound white bass. She was trolling a purple and silver crank bait at the time.
Heron Lake : June 9, Wes Hatchoot of Bosque Farms caught a 19.5-inch kokanee. He was trolling a green double whammy.
Bluewater Lake : June 10, Joel Baca of Sandia Park caught a 12-pound channel catfish. He was using a cooked chicken strip for bait.
Cochiti Lake : June 10, James Reidy of Albuquerque caught a 22-inch walleye and a 28-inch northern pike while fly fishing with a flash tail whistler.
Quemado Lake : June 10, Jeremy Flack of Belen caught a 20-inch rainbow trout. He was using a black and brown wooly bugger and caught several other trout on the same fly.
NORTHEAST AREA
CANJILON LAKES : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners and worms.
CHARETTE LAKES : Fishing was good for anglers using grasshoppers and power bait for trout up to 18 inches. Fishing was very good using worms for small perch
CIMARRON RIVER : Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 7cfs. Fishing was good using small spinners and small bead head nymphs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing at the Gravel Pit lakes was fair for anglers using power bait.
CLAYTON LAKE : Fishing was very good for anglers using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair using spinners and crank baits for trout and small walleye. Fishing pressure was light and we had no reports on other species.
COCHITI LAKE : Crappie and bluegill fishing continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers did well using minnows, worms and small jigs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using tubes, crank baits, minnows and top water lures for smallmouth bass. A few northern pike and walleye were taken by anglers using minnows, streamers and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.
CONCHAS LAKE : Fishing for bluegill continued to be very good this past week. Anglers did well using small spinners, worms and a variety of flies. Fishing for walleye was fair-to-good for anglers using deep diving crank baits, grubs and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was good using senkos, tubes, lizards and top water lures. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using crank baits, grubs and spinners. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using liver and cut bait.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, worms, power bait and small wet flies.
EAGLE NEST LAKE : Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using power bait and gold Kastmasters. A few perch were taken by anglers using worms. Fishing for kokanee was fair for anglers trolling Cripplures and Panther Martins tipped with corn.
HOPEWELL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE : Trout fishing continued to be very good at Lake Maloya this past week. Best baits were pink and rainbow power baits, Pistol Petes, Panther Martins and Super Dupers. Anglers fishing the west side cove caught several fish in the 12-to-14 inch range. Fishing at Lake Alice was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait and Super Dupers.
MAXWELL LAKES : We had no reports from anglers this week.
MCALLISTER LAKE : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners, power bait, salmon eggs and prop flies.
MONASTERY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.
MORPHY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and spinners.
PECOS RIVER : As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 231cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using copper john barrs, wooly buggers, spinners, salmon eggs and worms.
RED RIVER : Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 172cfs and the water was murky. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners, wooly buggers and night crawlers.
RIO GRANDE : The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 727cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using night crawlers, spinners and wooly buggers. Fishing for northern pike was fair for anglers using large red and white flies and jerk baits.
SPRINGER LAKE : Fishing was fair for anglers using spinners and minnows for small northern pike. A few catfish were taken by anglers using worms and cut bait.
STORRIE LAKE : Fishing was very good using cheese and salmon eggs for 16-to-20 inch trout. Fishing was good using worms and chicken liver in the evenings for catfish.
STUBBLEFIELD: We had no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE : The best reports from anglers this past week came from those fishing for catfish. They did well using liver, cut bait and dough baits in the evening and night time hours. Fishing for bass and walleye slowed considerably with a cold front that moved through the area. Some walleye were taken by anglers trolling deep crank baits, spinner/minnow and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs at 25-to-30 feet. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was slow-to-fair for anglers using tubes, jigs, senkos and finesse worms at 10-to-25 feet on main lake points.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE : Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using tail dancers, grubs and spinner/night crawler combinations. Most of the action was on the upper east side of the lake. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good for anglers using jerk baits, tubes, grubs and jointed shad raps in the coves. A few brown trout were taken by anglers fishing for walleye.
ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Fishing on the Bernalillo Drain was good for anglers using worms and liver for catfish. Fishing on the Corrales Drain was good using small flies and worms for bluegill and a few trout. We had no other reports this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE : Fishing for tiger musky from the bank was good this past week. Matt Pelletier and his wife of Albuquerque caught and released 3 and missed several others. They were using a variety of baits including Panther Martins, floating Rapalas and big swim baits. Fishing for catfish was fair using liver, dough bait and chicken strips. A few trout were taken by anglers using spinners and power bait.
CHAMA RIVER : Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 280cfs and 309cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was good for anglers using gold and black Panther Martins and night crawlers for brown and rainbow trout up to 18 inches. Anglers using worms and power bait reported catching quite a number of 8-to-10 inch rainbows. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.
EL VADO LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, spinners and salmon eggs. Most of the fish caught were in the 12-to-16 inch size and the best fishing was reported to be at the lower end of the lake.
FENTON LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait. Most of the fish caught were in the 8-to-10 inch range.
HERON LAKE : Kokanee fishing was fair this past week for anglers using Rooster Tails, Panther Martins and Double Whammies. The fish ranged in size from 13-to-19.5 inches and were scattered. The wind muddied up the water for a few days but it was clearing as of Sunday. Bank fishing was slow but there were a few rainbows taken by anglers using power bait.
JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 47cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and copper john barrs. Fishing on the Guadalupe was fair-to-good for anglers using stone fly imitations, copper john barrs and night crawlers. Fishing on the East Fork was good small prince nymphs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair for anglers using worms and small spinners.
MANZANO LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
NAVAJO LAKE : Fishing was fair trolling Arnies and wedding rings in 35-to-60 feet of water for kokanee. Anglers reported some success fishing near Francis Canyon and also up the Pine arm of the lake. Crappie fishing slowed a bit but some were taken by anglers using minnows and small jigs. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms and small jigs. Fishing for smallmouth bass was very good for anglers using crank baits and top water lures. Most of the bass were small. Fishing was fair using swim baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and crank baits for northern pike.
RAMAH LAKE : The water level is extremely low. Fishing is poor.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN : Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,400cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using red annelids, dead chickens, San Juan worms, small parachute adams and small bead head pheasant tail nymphs. Through the bait waters, fishing was fair-to-good using jerk baits, spinners, copper john barrs, night crawlers, garlic cheese and power bait.
SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing in the catch and release pond was fair for anglers using dead chickens, emergers, small copper john barrs and Griffith 's gnats. Fishing in the youth and middle ponds was good using worms, power eggs, power bait and dough bait for trout and catfish.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON : We had no reports from anglers this week.
BILL EVANS LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
BURN LAKE : Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver, hot dogs, night crawlers, dough bait and worms for catfish.
CABALLO LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs, grubs, crank baits and spinner/minnow rigs for walleye. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using sassy shad, grubs, crank baits and spinners. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers, liver, cut bait and dough baits. We had no reports on other species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE : Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair-to-good using senkos, top water lures, salt craws, crank baits, tubes and sweet beavers. Most of the action was on secondary points and in the backs of coves. Fishing for walleye was very good for anglers using night crawlers, crank baits, grubs and tubes. Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good for anglers using cut bait, liver and shrimp from boats over baited holes and from the bank. A few striped bass in the 8 pound class were taken by anglers using live bait and jigs. We had no reports on other species.
GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.
ESCONDIDA LAKE : Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
GILA RIVER : Water flow near Gila on Monday was 83cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS : Fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, corn, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using grubs, crank baits and night crawlers for white bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.
QUEMADO LAKE : Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers fishing from boats and using olive and black and brown bead head wooly buggers, green emergers and Pistol Petes. Most of the fish caught were in the 15-to-20 inch class. Fishing was good using orange bunny leeches for tiger musky.
RIO GRANDE : Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 976cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using white grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. On the river below Caballo Lake , fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, night crawlers and grubs for walleye and white bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using cut bait and liver.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE : Fishing was fair for anglers using worms, liver, hot dogs and dough baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
BONITO LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using spinners, power bait, salmon eggs, prop flies under a bubble and spinners.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair-to-good using liver and dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
BRANTLEY LAKE : Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.
CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was slow.
JAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN : Fishing was fair for anglers using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
OASIS PARK LAKE : The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete about June 30 of this year. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.
PECOS RIVER : Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 103cfs. Fishing was good using liver, dough bait and night crawlers for catfish.
PERCH LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.
RIO BONITO: We had no reports from anglers this week.
RUIDOSO RIVER : Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 7.3cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and small bead head nymphs.
SANTA ROSA LAKE : Fishing for walleye was fair-to-good for anglers using curly tail grubs, road runners, beetle spins and crank baits. Most of the fish caught were taken in 10-to-25 feet of water. Fishing for crappie slowed a bit but those caught were very healthy. Crank baits, minnows and small tubes worked best again this past week for the big crappie. Fishing was fair-to-good using top water lures, senkos, tubes, sweet beavers and jerk baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver, shrimp and hot dogs.
SUMNER LAKE : Fishing was very good again this past week for anglers using minnows and worms from the bank for bluegill. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good using Rat-L-Traps, jerk baits, tubes and worms. A few were also taken by anglers using spinner baits. Fishing for walleye was good-to-excellent for anglers using bottom bouncers/worm rigs, crank baits and grubs. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species.
