The international students will come from Albania, Scotland, Israel, Italy, Hungary, Spain and Finland to train and perform with children and teens from Dallas/Fort Worth, across Texas and throughout the U.S. during the Kids Who Care July musical theatre camp, held at The Scott Theatre.
At the end of the camp, the ensemble will debut an original musical, Earth and Soul, which will run July 26-29. Earth and Soul is the tale of five children’s journey to the center of the earth where they encounter ordinary people on extraordinary quests to save the planet. The journey begins when the kids wake to drumming in the middle of the night, and one is brave enough to begin digging toward its steady beat.
“Kids Who Care’s mission is to produce great kids through musical theatre education and performance,” said Deborah Jung, founding and executive director of Kids Who Care. “One of the ways we’ve done this for the past nineteen years is by providing powerful international cultural exchange opportunities to the kids who work with us.”
Many of the international students have trained and performed with Kids Who Care in previous years. Others are traveling to Fort Worth’s Kids Who Care based on recommendations from their friends and family, or because they have seen Kids Who Care perform in their country. In March of last year, for example, Kids Who Care’s Resident Company traveled to Reggio Emilia and Correggio, Italy, towns in the Italian Province of Reggio Emilia, for its Annual Spring Tour. All 13 students coming from Italy are from Correggio and saw Kids Who Care perform there last year.
“Kids Who Care is excited and proud to be bringing so many diverse children’s voices together this July,” said Jung. “Fort Worth is the perfect destination for this kind of international experience.”
Earth and Soul, an original musical presented by Kids Who Care, will run July 26-29, 2007 at The Scott Theatre, 1300 Gendy St. in Fort Worth. Performance times are Thursday, July 26 @ 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 27 @ 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 28 @ 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 29 @ 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 30 @ 2:00 p.m. Tickets cost $12 - $15, with special pricing of $10 each for groups of 10 or more.
