Little Rock television station Today’s THV Sports Director Craig O'Neill will provide color commentary for the races which begin at 10 a.m. and feature both youth and adult divisions. Teams and individuals will vie for the coveted “Pride of the Fleet” award while trying to escape winning the infamous “Titanic” award.
All entries in the race must be constructed of cardboard and be able to pass the “ice pick” test by the judges if deemed necessary. No motors are allowed and everything on the boat, with the exception of the oars, the propulsion system, and steering devices, must be made entirely of cardboard.
In addition to the races, there will be a tug-of-war contest, the king of the beach volleyball tournament, a special treasure dig just for kids, and a sand sculpting contest. And don’t miss the other world championship taking place at the event -- the watermelon eating contest. Rounding out the day is the Cardboard Boat Demolition Derby. Admission for spectators is a $5 parking fee with proceeds benefiting the Boy Scouts of America.

The Heber Springs Area Chamber of Commerce Web page, www.heber-springs.com, has instructions on how to build a cardboard boat, downloadable entry forms, rules and regulations. Lodging information can also be found on the Web site. Or call the chamber toll-free at 1-800-774-3237.
