Denison, Texas -- Grayson County Historical Society invites you to join them for its November meeting on Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m.
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are best remembered for their roles in founding a nation, but their contributions to American gardening and horticulture left a lasting legacy of their own. Both men were passionate gardeners, agricultural innovators, and lifelong students of the natural world.
This presentation will explore how their work at Mount Vernon and Monticello helped shape early American gardening traditions through experimentation, landscape design, and the introduction and cultivation of new plant varieties.
Discover how Washington's practical approach to agriculture and Jefferson's fascination with botany influenced gardening practices in the young republic.
We'll also examine their interests in native and imported plants, innovative growing techniques, and the relationship between gardening and the ideals of the American Enlightenment. From vegetable gardens to grand landscapes, their influence extended far beyond their own estates. Join us as we uncover a lesser-known side of these two Founding Fathers and the horticultural legacy they left behind.
Our presenter for this evening is Barbara "Barb" Grisham. Born in Marion, Illinois, Barb holds a degree in Home Economics Education. She has lived in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin before making Texas her home in 1981.
Barb has a lifelong passion for volunteering and community involvement, having dedicated her time to churches and schools wherever she has lived. She also enjoys exploring the unique history of the communities she calls home.
Barb has been a member of the Master Gardener program for 30 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in gardening and horticulture. In recent years, she has focused much of her time on Junior Master Gardener education, sharing her love of gardening to help inspire the next generation of gardeners.
We want to welcome the newest members of our society and hope they enjoy sharing in our monthly get-togethers.
We always meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in the evening at Frontier Village and Museum in the Judge R.C. Vaughan Community Room.
