Across the 10 counties served by the Dallas Builders Association, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, ironworkers, welders, equipment operators and countless other craft professionals transform blueprints and raw land into the homes, condominiums and apartments where North Texas families build their lives.

Their work demands precision, problem-solving, physical endurance and years of training through apprenticeships and hands-on experience. These are not “jobs you take when you can’t go to college.” They are highly skilled careers that require continuous learning, strict adherence to safety standards and pride in quality craftsmanship.

All too often, the skilled trades remain underappreciated and under promoted. Many young people are steered exclusively toward four-year degrees while excellent, well-paying opportunities in residential construction go unfilled. The result is a persistent shortage of qualified workers at a time when North Texas needs reliable, safe and attainable housing. That shortage constrains the supply of new homes and raises building costs, both of which make housing affordability more difficult.

This Labor Day, let’s give these men and women more than a long weekend. Let’s thank them for the roofs over our heads and the floors beneath our feet. The communities rising throughout North Texas stand as quiet testimony to their skill. Let’s encourage our schools, parents and counselors to present the trades as a first-choice career path, not a fallback, and support apprenticeship and training opportunities that prepare the next generation to carry this essential work forward.

On Labor Day and every day, these skilled professionals deserve our respect, recognition and investment in the future of their trades.
