The designation reflects collaboration between Public Works’ Office of Environmental Sustainability and the Planning Division to implement strategies that expand access to solar energy. These efforts included updating development codes, training staff, and reviewing zoning standards to align with best practices.
“With growing energy demand and evolving technologies, it’s critical that we take proactive steps to support sustainable solutions,” said Sujata Gautam, Sustainability Manager for McKinney’s Office of Environmental Sustainability. “This designation reflects the meaningful work our teams have done to remove barriers and create opportunities for solar adoption, and we’re committed to continuing that progress for our community.”
Led by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), the Energy Ready program supports local governments in reducing barriers to solar adoption and modernizing energy systems. McKinney joins more than 600 communities nationwide that have earned SolSmart designation.
McKinney has also earned recognition for its broader sustainability and energy initiatives:
- Fleet Services Recognition: McKinney Fleet Services received the Shining Star Award and a Bronze designation from the Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition for efforts to reduce transportation energy use and improve air quality. The recognition highlights the city’s success in integrating alternative fuels and adding electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet.
- Regional EV Infrastructure Funding: The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) recommended five of McKinney’s six proposed EV charging station sites for funding, with the sixth site placed on a waitlist. These five locations will host a total of 10 new charging stations. Out of 109 eligible sites, McKinney had the second-highest number of selected projects in the region. These investments will expand EV charging access, strengthen the city’s transportation network, and support long-term environmental resilience.
Earlier this year, City Council also officially adopted McKinney’s first Sustainability Roadmap, which outlines long-term strategies focused on environmental stewardship and efficient use of resources to help guide future policies affecting utilities, transportation, and quality of life for residents.
Together, these achievements underscore McKinney’s commitment to forward-thinking energy strategies, improved air quality, and sustainable growth.
