Denison, Texas -- Step back into the Texas frontier and uncover the remarkable story of Olive Oatman—often remembered as the “Tattooed Lady.” Imagine, if you will, a 19th-century Victorian woman sitting for a portrait: dressed in proper attire, poised and reserved. But as she turns her face, you see five distinct blue lines tattooed across her chin—marks not of fashion, but of survival. Her story is one of captivity, resilience, and life on the edge of two worlds. Come and hear this fascinating tale, enjoy refreshments, and visit with friends.

Our presenter, Gary Thomas, is a longtime Denison resident who moved to the area in 1996 and became one of the earliest “loft dwellers” on Main Street in 1999. A retired ultrasound technician and amateur historian, Gary holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Filmmaking from Oklahoma State University. He has produced over twenty short amateur documentaries and is currently working on a video project featuring interviews with Denison residents who have experienced paranormal events. If you have a local ghost story, he would love to hear from you.
Gary is also one of the founding members of the Red River Valley Military Vehicle Club and an early supporter of the Denison Doc Holliday Festival. Through his research, he discovered that many local residents were unaware that Olive Oatman once lived in Sherman and is buried at West Hill Cemetery. While he humbly describes himself as an enthusiast rather than an expert, his passion for sharing her story brings history vividly to life.
We always meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in the evening and our location is Frontier Village and Museum at Loy Lake Park in the Judge R.C. Vaughan Community Room. The Park is located midway between Sherman and Denison off Hwy. 75, Exit 67. Our meetings are open to members and their guests. Everyone is welcome to come and take part.
After the program we have a food spread to be enjoyed by all. Which is generously brought by our members.
