McKinney, Texas -- McKinney Main Street is bringing back one of its most popular new downtown traditions this spring as the Grandma Stand returns to the McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square beginning Saturday, March 14. The stand will be open Saturdays from 9–11 a.m. through May 30.
“It’s a simple concept, just a person in a chair behind a small table. But what happens at the stand is something far more meaningful. We are offering a moment of comfort and perspective from someone who has lived enough life to share a little wisdom,” said Andrew Jones, Director of the Cultural District. “In a world that can often feel overwhelming, sometimes the best thing a person can offer is a simple conversation and a listening ear.”
Visitors who stop by can talk about anything from everyday worries to life’s bigger questions. Introduced last Fall, visitors to the Grandma Stand came for advice, others for encouragement, and many simply appreciated the opportunity to connect with someone who genuinely listens.

“Downtown McKinney has always been about people and relationships,” said Jones. “The Grandma Stand captures the spirit of this community and the culture that makes the historic district so special. These grandmas remind us that kindness is always in reach.”
The McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square operates Saturdays in Downtown McKinney and features local farmers and artisan vendors that reflect the city’s unique culture.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Grandma Stand, share a story, ask a question, or enjoy a moment of conversation because sometimes the best advice in life comes from a grandma.

History of the Grandma Stand
The Grandma Stand began in 2012 when creator Mike Matthews set up a small street-corner booth in New York City to connect his 95-year-old grandmother, Eileen Matthews, with passersby through friendly, face-to-face video chats. After Eileen passed away in 2018 at age 102, Matthews revived the idea with a bright purple pop-up stand, Eileen’s favorite color, now hosted by a rotating group of “grandmas” from around the country. Each Grandma Stand pop-up offers free wisdom and empathy to anyone who stops to chat, reminding people that a simple conversation can brighten a day.
