Paris, Texas -- The Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site invites artists of all ages and skill levels to participate in Art Day on Saturday, March 28. The site will be open from 1:00 to 4:00 pm for visitors to sketch, photograph, paint, and create artwork inspired by the historic home and its collection. This is a free community event. Most art mediums are welcome, with some restrictions.
Visitors can find full details on the Maxey House website or Facebook page. Participants should bring their own art supplies, as the Maxey House does not provide materials.
Art Day welcomes guests to experience the home through the lens of its artistic history. Several women of the Maxey and Long families were accomplished artists, and the site features original paintings, drawings, and decorative pieces created or collected by them. The collection provides a rich source of inspiration for visitors of all ages.
“I love watching participants discover details in the house and artwork that spark their imagination,” said Elana Barton, site educator. “It is especially meaningful to see art students use this event as a chance to practice their skills in a historic setting. The creativity that fills the house during Art Day is one of my favorite parts of the year.”

Art Day offers a chance for artists to explore the Maxey House’s history while creating their own interpretations of the space. The event is free and come-and-go. For more information about the event, please see the site’s Facebook page or website at visitsambellmaxeyhouse.com
The Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, was built in 1868 in the High Victorian Italianate-style as the home of Samuel Bell Maxey and his wife Marilda. Maxey served in the U.S.-Mexico War, was a Confederate general and two-term U.S. Senator. Members of the Maxey family lived in the house until 1966 and the restored house reflects almost 100 years of their continuous use.
