Dodd City, Texas -- Most high school basketball teams can only dream of a season that takes them to the state championship tournament. For the Dodd City Lady Hornets, it is a fairly regular occurrence. And if there was ever a year where the coach gets to share the MVP award, it might be this one.

Dodd City head coach Landon Dyers took a team with only one senior all the way to the final four. To be fair, anyone who has seen her play can tell you that wasn't just any senior. Addison Weeks is a versatile all-state athlete that can do anything on the court - shoot from the perimeter, drive to the hoop, rebound and play defense.

But it takes more than great coaching and one player to make it to the big show. It takes a team. As the season progressed, this roster comprised of five freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and a senior began to jell.

Dodd City dominated its district competition and opened the playoffs with a 21-point win over Sulphur Bluff. Perrin-Whitt put up a fight before falling to Dodd City, 42-32, in the area round. Another 10-point win, this time over May, gave Dodd City a shot at the regional title.

That's where the Lady Hornets showed up and showed out. Dodd City doubled up on Slocum, 48-24, to punch its ticket to the state championship tournament.

Unfortunately, that was where the season ended at the hands of defending state champion Broaddus.

Broaddus went on a 20-6 run in the first quarter and led 26-17 at the half en route to a 51-27 victory in the state semifinals.

Addison Weeks put up eight points, dished off four assists, grabbed three steals and pulled down three rebounds.

Dodd City junior Kayleigh McBrayer also had eight points and came up with a pair of steals.

Kendyl Lindsey finished with four points, four rebounds and three deflected passes.

Gracyn Shindler had three points and two rebounds.
Kodi Dorau tossed in two points and grabbed six rebounds. Kennedy Chaney had two points and one rebound.

After a remarkable four-year run by Weeks, no doubt this will be a different team next year. But four freshmen, two sophomores and two juniors now have a state tournament run under their belts. They know what it takes to get there. And they will be back.
