Fannin County voters ask for new leadership

Fannin County, Texas -- Fannin County voters have asked for a change in leadership although it will require a runoff to determine who will be sworn in January 1, 2027 as Fannin County judge.

In the March 3 Fannin County Republican Primary, former Bonham mayor H. Compton garnered 36.2% of the ballots cast to finish with 1,713 votes.

A newcomer to the political scene, John Tynan, made a strong showing with 1,112 votes to place second.

Since no candidate had more than 50% of the votes, Compton and Tynan are headed for a runoff May 26, 2026.

The current county judge, Newt Cunningham, came in third with 1,045 votes, followed by Bill Carey (525) votes and Jim Simpson (340).

Derek Moore will be the new treasurer with 2,485 votes. Dale McQueen had 2,031 votes.

Brandon Wallace will be the commissioner for Pct. 2. Wallace had 686 votes to defeat Jimmie Allred with 583 votes.

In the race for commissioner of Pct. 2, Mike Keene defeated incumbent Doug Kopf. Keene had 857 votes and Kopf collected 603 votes.

Mark Buchanan was a decisive winner in the race for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 with more than 75% of the votes cast. Buchanan finished with 1,173 votes. Paul Ivy had 386 votes.

Early voting for the May 26, 2026 runoff election begins Monday, May 18, 2026. Early voting ends Friday, May 22, 2026.
