Sherman, Texas -- Theater For Hope is starting their new 2026 year with their season opener, Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan and adapted by Joseph Robinette. This production is sponsored by John and Debbie Markl with performances-- April 9,10,11,16,17,18 at Hope on Houston located at 901 E. Houston Street in Sherman, TX. This will be the first time that Theater For Hope will be performing for two weekends instead of one.
Auditions for this Newberry Award-winning story, Sarah, Plain and Tall, will be held Monday and Tuesday, February 23 and 24 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The cast includes: 3 Men, 4 Women, 1 Boy, and 3 Girls, plus a few minor characters for example--a paperboy, a farmer, a salesman, etc. We are also thinking about the possibility of a double cast.
Set in the early 1900s, this play brings to life the charming, heartwarming story of a Kansas farmer, Jacob Witting, a widower with two children—Anna and Caleb, who places an ad in the newspapers seeking a wife. He receives a letter from Sarah Wheaton of Maine who says she will visit the family for a month to see how things work out: "I will come by train. I will wear a yellow bonnet. I am plain and tall."
Narrated by Anna reminiscing on the eve of her wedding, the story unfolds in a fascinating flashback on that often exciting, sometimes tumultuous month when Sarah and the Wittings came to know one another and learned a few things about themselves as well.
