On April 30, 1952, in Norfolk, Virginia, Evelyn married Lynn Winnith Hicks and together they shared a loving 50 years. A long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church in Bonham, Texas, she was a devoted Sunday School teacher who positively impacted the lives of many. Evelyn worked at State Farm Insurance for 35 years. She started as the office secretary, working her way up the ladder, to retire as the office Administrative Assistant. Evelyn was known for her remarkable ability to remember birthdays, ensuring that no one felt forgotten.
Her passions included playing Bingo at the Wesley House, spending time working on puzzles, and crocheting and sewing caps and beanies for children in Haiti and local Head Start programs. Evelyn was an amazing cook, she delighted her family with "Grannie sized" dessert portions that will forever be cherished in their memories. Her feisty spirit characterized her approach to life.
Evelyn leaves behind her loving family, including her grandson Darrin (Jennifer) Jones of Telephone, Texas; granddaughter Briane Hall of McKinney, Texas; sister Joyce and husband Roy Kemp of Bonham, Texas; great-grandchildren Jazmine Hall, Kyrsten Hall, Garret Hall, Brook (Wylie) Miller, Lexi Jones; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin Scroggins and Gertrude Tarpley Scroggins, husband, Lynn Winnith Hicks, daughter Cheryl Spann, great-grandson Jordan Jones, and brother, W.B. Scroggins.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Wesley House for their outstanding support and love and the team at TMC Bonham, for such great care. A special thank you goes to Yosenia Tovar for loving and caring for Mrs. Evelyn.
Funeral services will be held on January 28, 2026, 2:00 p.m., at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Arledge Ridge Cemetery, Bonham, Texas. Those who knew and loved Evelyn Mae Hicks are invited to join.
