Bonham, Texas -- Jimmy Glenn Avery, known to most simply as Glenn, was born on August 30, 1950, in Terrell, Texas, one of five children born to Burl and Hazel Avery. From early on, Glenn had a deep love for football, rock and roll, hunting, fishing, motorcycles, and giving people a hard time -usually with a grin that let you know it was all in fun.

He lived and attended school in Dallas, Texas, where he met “the girl down the street”, Barbara Vickrey. After winning her over with his gorgeous hair and sharp wit, they married on October 2, 1971, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with laughter, music, and family. Together, they raised two sons, Donavan and Shane, of whom Glenn was incredibly proud.

Glenn was a natural-born entertainer. In his younger years, he was the lead singer for the band Dark Horse, and later in life, he sang with Fat Chance -proof that the rock and roll spirit never dies. When he wasn’t making music, he could usually be found riding his four-wheeler, feeding deer, or watching a good music or band documentary.

He worked 30 years with Loyd Brigance Sod Sales before retiring, though he continued helping out for a few years with Mayfield McCraw.

Above all, Glenn loved hanging with his family, cracking jokes, and enjoying the moment. He was especially proud of his five grandchildren -Hope, Seth, Layton, Landon, and Kaycee Avery -who were frequent targets of his jokes and some of his favorite people to laugh with.

Glenn passed away at his home on January 22nd. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burl and Hazel Avery, and his sister-in-law, Susan Avery.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons and their too good to be true spouses, Donavan and Stephanie Avery, Shane and Amanda Avery; his siblings and their spouses: Barbara and Doug Wilson, Kay and Jerry Saulter, Derrall and Michelle Avery, and Ricky and Jean Avery; his grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever remember his humor.

Glenn will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and often laughed about -just the way he would have wanted.

A visitation to celebrate Glenn's life will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham.
