McKinney, Texas -- At approximately 9:11 p.m. on Aug. 30, the McKinney Fire Department (MFD) was dispatched to a reported structure fire near the 7400 block of Joshua Tree Trail, located just south of Gabe Nesbitt Park. The caller reported a fire in the primary bedroom.

Upon arrival, Truck 11 reported thick smoke showing from the two-story residence and initiated an aggressive interior attack. Additional crews, including Med 11 and Truck 3, assisted with fire suppression and primary search operations. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and extreme heat conditions on the second floor.

While operating inside, a firefighter from Truck 11 became disoriented and low on air. A “MAYDAY” was transmitted, and a coordinated rescue effort by fellow firefighters successfully removed the firefighter from the structure. All personnel were safely accounted for.

The fire quickly spread into the attic, forcing a transition to exterior fire operations. Several neighboring fire departments assisted by covering fire stations while MFD resources remained engaged at the scene.

A total of nine firefighters were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to overexertion. All of the firefighters were treated and released this morning. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The McKinney Fire Department is thankful that all firefighters survived this incident. We ask the community to keep our injured firefighters in your thoughts and prayers as they recover.

“The quick actions and teamwork of our crews saved a firefighter’s life during this incident. Their training and dedication ensured that a very dangerous situation did not turn into a tragedy. I am proud of their courage and professionalism,” said Fire Chief Paul Dow.
