Operating for three years in Collin County Community Garden Kitchen is a Beacon of Hope
Combating food insecurity in a variety of ways
McKinney, Texas -- – Community Garden Kitchen (CGK), a vital nonprofit addressing food insecurity, is the only one of its kind in Collin County to offer free, warm, and nutritious evening meals, Monday-Thursday 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at their facility located at 501 Howard St. CGK provides a lifeline for individuals and families facing economic hardship, ensuring no one goes hungry.
More than 109,000 meals have been prepared and served since CGK opened on June 22, 2022, and began operating and serving the community. They continue to make a profound impact through the innovative “Angela’s Table” program which offers a welcoming, restaurant style environment. Guests, including families, single parents, veterans, seniors, the disabled, the working poor, and those experiencing homelessness, can enjoy healthy, freshly prepared meals at no cost. No paperwork or identification is required, removing barriers and preserving dignity for all.
“Food insecurity is a growing challenge in Collin County, and CGK is committed to providing not just meals but also hope and community,” said President, Angela Poen. “Our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to nutritious food in a respectful and welcoming environment.”
In addition to evening meals, CGK’s dedicated volunteers prepare and distribute sack lunches daily to day laborers, individuals experiencing homelessness, and others in need, extending the organization’s reach throughout the community. CGK also partners with four area food pantries and has distributed over 104 tons of food to support the pantries efforts in addressing food insecurity.
CGK is supported by two full-time staff, a part-time kitchen assistant, and approximately 180 weekly volunteers. The non-profit’s unique model fosters community, restores dignity, and addresses the critical link between nutrition, health, and well-being. Without it, many vulnerable residents would go without access to consistent, nutritious food in Collin County.
Vision: To be a center of hope and compassion, ensuring no one in the community suffers from food insecurity.
