Angel Hands is the first hospice in the United States to formally integrate end-of-life doulas into its care model, establishing a new national standard for holistic, person-centered hospice care. This innovative approach now also shapes the organization’s volunteer training.
The curriculum was developed by Shaena Whitney, Director of Volunteer Services and a certified end-of-life doula. Designed to go beyond basic state requirements, the training prepares volunteers with practical skills as well as a deeper understanding of the dying process.
“This training goes deeper,” said Whitney. “Volunteers are not only learning how to support patients, they’re gaining confidence, awareness, and clarity about what it truly means to walk alongside someone at the end of life. That level of preparation makes a meaningful difference.”
Angel Hands volunteers serve in key non-medical roles such as companionship visits, caregiver respite, and presence-based patient support. Training includes communication techniques, comfort care strategies, and mentorship throughout their service. For those pursuing education or careers in healthcare, social work, counseling, or related fields, letters of recommendation are available.
Jessica Cagel, Transitions Support Specialist at Angel Hands, emphasized the emotional impact volunteers have:
“Seeing our patients light up when a volunteer walks in is truly heartwarming. Angel Hands already goes the distance to ensure every patient’s needs are met and they are as comfortable as possible, but seeing those smiles when a volunteer offers their time, presence, and compassion is something truly special. It reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.”
With a strong presence already established in the Texoma area, Angel Hands is focused on growing its local volunteer team. Community organizations, civic groups, schools, and area leaders are encouraged to help spread the word.
