Trenton, Texas -- Tom McClure Holmes, 88, of Trenton, Texas passed away in Gatesville, Texas on July 17, 2025.
He was born in Bonham, Texas to Tom Hamilton Holmes and Edith McClure Holmes.
Those that knew him best called him Tom Mc. He graduated from Trenton schools in 1955 and attended East Texas State University. As a young child, he served as a page boy during elections at the Fannin County Courthouse and was an apprentice for his father at The Trenton Tribune. He became interested in Western Swing Music. Tom Mc had a beautiful voice and played the guitar. As a young man, he played at the Louisiana Hay Ride on the weekends and at various celebrations and meetings. On May 21, 2011, Tom was inducted into The Texas Western Swing Music Hall of Fame.
Tom met Jo Nell Newby in 1959 at the park in Greenville. They married on July 1st, 1960 at her parent’s home in Greenville. The couple moved to Louisville, Kentucky where Tom Mc was stationed at Fort Knox. Later he served in the Air Force Reserve. The couple moved back to Trenton in November of 1960. Tom Mc resumed being the owner, publisher, and writer at The Trenton Tribune until 2020.
Tom Mc was a member of the Trenton First Baptist Church. He served on the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department as Chief for many years, Trenton City Council, Burn’s Cemetery Board, and the Bonham Hospital Board. Tom Mc was an Active Member Mason in the Trenton Masonic Lodge #761. He served as Worshipful Master and District Deputy.
Tom Mc is survived by wife Jo Nell Newby Holmes, daughter Jill and husband Matt Winkler of The Grove, Texas, grandsons Samuel and Seth Winkler of The Grove, Texas.
Family and friends will miss his lovely voice and his vast knowledge of the history of Trenton.
