Heber Springs, Arkansas -- Guide Mike Winkler has a great report from the Little Red River near Heber Springs and below Greers Ferry Lake dam this week. He says the water releases from the dam have been "spot on this week" from what the Southwestern Power Administration projects it will do, and anglers have been able to count on releases beginning between 9-11 a.m. and wrapping up between 9-11 p.m.
The link to see SWPA's projected releases is available on the Fishing Report under the Little Red River listing.
Winkler says the generation schedule being used now "is absolutely perfect for wade fishing and fishing from a boat."
Winkler has several tips for fishing the Little Red in his report this week, as well as where to wade at various hours of the day depending on the releases, and what baits to use with the fishing style you're using. Give it a look.
The trout waters, especially the Little Red and the White River system, are where you are seeing the most change in the fishing patterns during his hot spell of summer, and that's been especially true with the high flows below dams holding back flood-pool waters. The big Corps lakes are now slowly dropping toward normal pool level. Everywhere else seems fully involved in the usual summer patterns typical of hot Arkansas summer fishing (re: your best bet is starting out before the sun creeps up and intensifies the air and surface water temperatures, and returning after the sun goes down, giving the ol' topwater or popper-style baits a try, if not a cricket or worm for a nice bream).
In the photo above, a young Louisiana angler was fishing with Winkler recently. Winkler reports that Luke "tricked this brown trout into eating an olive sculpin pattern on a hot, sunny day here on the Little Red River."
