  • Lewis Crain, an independent, external auditor who examines the finances of several counties, complimented Fannin County for maintaining a general fund balance of $6.4 million, which is approximately 40% of the county's annual expenses. Counties are expected to keep at least 25% of its annual expenses in reserve to mitigate any unforeseeable disaster. In a year when the county was concerned about a possible budget shortfall, the county was actually able to finish the past fiscal year in the black by more than half a million dollars. "That means that either you over-budgeted, which is rare, or department heads held the budget down," remarked Crain. "That's the reason the county had a surplus of $552,000 in FY2023. You had a good year; I think you are in a good position for whatever happens next year. And I applaud you on this magnificent building."

  • 1999 – The body of British climber George Mallory is found on Mount Everest, 75 years after his disappearance in 1924. George Herbert Leigh-Mallory (18 June 1886 – 8 or 9 June 1924) was an English mountaineer who participated in the first three British Mount Everest expeditions from the early to mid-1920s. In 1922, he took part in a second expedition to make the first ascent of the world's highest mountain, in which his team achieved a world altitude record of 27,300 feet using supplemental oxygen. During the 1924 expedition, Mallory and his climbing partner, Andrew "Sandy" Irvine, disappeared on the Northeast Ridge of Everest. The pair were last seen alive approximately 800 vertical feet from the summit, sparking debate as to whether one or both of them reached the summit before they died. Mallory's body was found in 1999 by the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition. Once, when asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory purportedly replied, "Because it's there."
