John Richard Hoelzel, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 15, 2021. He was born on November 24, 1936, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Hugo and Thelma Hoelzel. Growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, John attended Will Rogers High School. He went on to Rice University, the University of Texas, and Southern Methodist University, obtaining both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. John prized above all his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, which began when he was a college student. After coming to repentance and faith in Christ at that time, he strived to live a life pleasing to God!

John married Patricia Rellahan Hoelzel in 1959, and they were married for 49 years until Pat departed for heaven in 2008. John and Pat had four children: John, Jr., Michael, Shawn, and Molly. John married Jan Hoelzel in 2012.

John worked as a software engineer for several different companies, retiring from Raytheon Systems. After retirement he spent his time doing everything, he could do to advance the kingdom of God: leading Bible studies and prayer groups, pursuing discipleship growth with other men of faith, sharing the Gospel of Christ with anyone he could, writing books and writing insightful “Thinkables” that applied Bible truths to a variety of interesting topics. John genuinely loved God and desired to live for Him with all of his heart, and so he has left us a lasting legacy!

John was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Pat and his son, Michael. Survivors include his son, John, Jr. (Johnny), his son Shawn and Karen Hoelzel and grandchildren Ben, Blake and Aubin, his daughter Molly and Joe Goodson and grandchildren Grace and Faith, his niece Allison Spurlock, his current wife Jan, her son Dave and Patty Brown and grandchildren Darron, Kevin and Eric, her daughter Allis Brown, her son Toby and Laura Marie Brown and grandson Jairo, her daughter Lauri Brown, and her daughter Cindy and Scott Brown and grandchildren Elliott, Dylan, Riley, Symon, Sierra, Josiah and Caden.

John’s life Bible verse was Psalm 119:57: “You are my satisfaction, Lord, and all that I need, so I’m determined to do everything you say.” (The Passion Translation)
