Leave fireworks to the professionals

McKinney, Texas (Dec. 20, 2017) - The New Year is rapidly approaching and thousands are starting to make plans on how to celebrate 2018. Before making New Year’s Eve plans, the McKinney Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) has some safety tips for residents and visitors to keep in mind when considering fireworks.

Safety tips:

·  The best way to protect your family is to not use any fireworks at home. Instead, attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals.

·  If you plan to use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area. Per city ordinance, the possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks within the City of McKinney is prohibited.

·  Sparklers can heat up to 1,200 degrees and are dangerous for young children to hold. Instead let your children use glow sticks.

“Sparklers and anything that is projectile, are illegal within the city limits of McKinney,” said Fire Marshal Mike Smith. “Basically your safest bet is attend a professional Fireworks display and leave the fireworks to the pros.”

The FMO has prepared a guide in order to assist with the submittal of an issuance of a permit for fireworks or pyrotechnic display. Visit online at www.McKinneyFire.org for more information.
