The ABC’s of Bats is the topic for Second Saturday at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on August 9.  Speaker for the program will be Dr. Bryon K. Clark, at 10 a.m. in the Visitor Center Meeting Room at the Refuge.

Clark is Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs – Student Learning and Accreditation at Southeastern Oklahoma State University; he previously served as a Professor of Biological Sciences, Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, and Dean of the School of Graduate and University Studies at Southeastern.  He holds a B.A. in Biology from Central College in Iowa, a M.S. in Biology from Western Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in Biology from Kansas State University.  Following a post-doctoral position at Oklahoma State University with the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Department of Zoology, he moved to Southeastern in 1990.   Bryon’s research interests have focused on the ecology and natural history of bats, rodents, and shrews.

Bats are present throughout most of the world, performing vital ecological roles of pollinating flowers and dispersing fruit seeds. Many tropical plant species depend entirely on bats for the distribution of their seeds. Bats are important, as they consume insect pests, reducing the need for pesticides.

Second Saturday programs are sponsored by Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Hagerman.  The programs are free and open to the public.  The Refuge is located at 6465 Refuge Road, Sherman, 75092.  For more information, please contact the Refuge, 903 786 2826 or visit www.friendsofhagerman.com
