McKINNEY, Texas  –Temperatures in North Texas are climbing, and the McKinney Fire Department (MFD) reminds residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness or possibly death. The best time to prepare for extreme temperatures is before they occur.

In the USA, an average of 618 people die annually as a result of heat illness. The most dangerous place to be is inside your home or other building with little or no air conditioning. The elderly, those who work or exercise outdoors, infants and children, the homeless and people with chronic medical conditions are most vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat.

“Take precautions to prevent serious health effects such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke or even death. Stay cool, drink lots of water to prevent dehydration and stay informed on weather advisories and warnings,” advises MFD Public Information Officer Stacie Durham. “If you don’t have access to air conditioning, there are options for relief during the hottest hours of the day such as recreation centers, libraries and shopping centers. The Salvation Army in McKinney anticipates having a cooling center in limited operation by June 23.”

 “Make it a priority to check on family, friends and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable,” reminds Durham. “Our goal is to prevent a tragedy.”
