Denison -- “Hollywood: A Night of Stars!” is the theme for the Grayson College Cosmetology Program’s spring fashion show on April 14 at 7:00 p.m. More than 50 cosmetology students are participating in the event held in the Black Box Theatre in the Arts & Communication Center on Grayson College’s Main Campus in Denison.

Benefitting the Crisis Center of Grayson County, the fashion show’s admission is by donation only. All donations go to the local nonprofit group. In addition, those who donate are eligible for door prizes including GC salon services.

“The fashion show is a fun way to showcase the talents of our cosmetology students and give back to our community,” said Rebecca Blackburn, cosmetology professor.

The show’s theme highlights Hollywood fashion from the ‘30s era to the present with such celebrities as Shirley Temple, Dolly Parton and Oprah Winfrey. Dillard’s contributed several fashion pieces to incorporate into the show.

"Dillard’s has been generous with our students and we are grateful for that generosity,” Blackburn said. “Their contributions augment what the students have supplied, and we know the audience will enjoy the show.”

Cosmetology students are working daily to prepare for the show. They’ve brainstormed ideas, brought in props and their own fashion pieces, and designed the program. Students are guided by GC’s cosmetology professors, who are assisting with all aspects of the production.

“The fashion show allows students to give back to the community by using their talents to produce an event that benefits a community organization,” said Blackburn. “Some students are skilled in the area of make-up artistry while others have strong styling and/or cutting talents. All will be featured in the show.”

Fashion show participants are students in one of Grayson College’s four cosmetology certificate programs. The Cosmetology Program is a one-year program that prepares students with professional skills for hair styling, manicures, pedicures, skincare, hair shaping, chemical reformation, principles of hair coloring, and other related skills.

Upon completing 42 semester hours of cosmetology courses and 1500 clock hours, students are issued a certificate of completion and become eligible to apply for the Cosmetology State Board Exam.  After passing the state exam, they become licensed hairdressers.

GC’s Esthetician and Skin Care Specialist Program is a nine-month program that prepares students with professional skills for skin care and other related skills. Upon completing 22 semester hours of esthetician courses and 750 clock hours, students are issued a certificate of completion and become eligible to apply for the Esthetician State Board Exam. Students who pass the state exam become licensed esthetician and skin care specialists.

The college’s Nail Technician Program is a five-month program that prepares students with professional skills for manicure, pedicure, nail structure and growth, advanced nail techniques, and other related skills. Upon completing 16 semester hours of nail technician courses and 600 clock hours, students are issued a certificate of completion and become eligible to apply for the Nail Technician State Board Exam. Upon passing the state exam, students become licensed nail technicians.
