“Post-Civil War Reconstruction: Lee-Peacock Feud”

Presented by: Janet Latham

Step back in history to the time of the Reconstruction period in Texas through the voice of someone who actually lived it!  Impossible?

On Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 12:00 in the Commissioners’ Courtroom, the Denton County Office of History & Culture will host a lecture by local storyteller and traveling museum docent, Janet Latham on the Post-Civil War Reconstruction.

Janet’s lecture educates the listener on the history of the Lee-Peacock Feud, the longest and bloodiest feud in Texas history, through the voice of Dorinda Pierce, a local school teacher of the time.

As the Denton County Heritage Festival planned for this April will focus on the Civil War/Reconstruction Period, Janet hopes to stir up curiosity about life in Denton during that time, and to provide a look at how relating history through the eyes of a historical character is accomplished.

The presentation by “Dorinda Pierce” will be followed by a discussion of the process of taking on a historical character and what was happening in Denton during Reconstruction that might lend itself to the development of some powerful stories that pertain specifically to Denton.

Janet, a native Texan, is an active volunteer for the Denton County Office of History & Culture, a member of the Denton County Historical Commission, a professional storyteller and a former teacher. She taught four years in the Middle East (Bahrain) and two years in Nairobi, Kenya at the International School of Kenya. Her most recentposition was as librarian at WS Ryan Elementary School in Denton before she retired in 2011.

All exhibits and lectures are free and open to the public.  The courthouse has handicapped parking and accessibility through the north entrance.  The Denton County Office of History & Culture is located in the historic Denton County Courthouse at 110 W. Hickory in Denton, TX.
