AUSTIN, TX—The concept of Zero Waste (…or darn close) has recently made landfall in Central Texas and Austin is taking the lead as the first city in the state to officially pursue the goal of 95% waste diversion from area landfills by 2040.

Through Austin’s Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO), communities, businesses and government departments are engaging in diversion programs, such as recycling, up-cycling and reuse and including composting programs for food oriented establishments. Through the URO, all businesses, including commercial, multi-family dwellings, restaurants and retail spaces, have compliance deadlines to meet via a phase-in process dictated by size and type of company.

Recognizing that Austin’s Resource Recovery Department faces the daunting task of getting thousands of businesses into compliance and that many area businesses may not have the time or capacity to navigate the policy, local Zero Waste advocate and entrepreneur, Stacy Guidry, established Texas Zero Waste Strategies to provide assistance.

“I have been heavily involved in state and local recycling and Zero Waste issues for the last decade. Having been a consistent stakeholder in the city-sponsored process for URO development and implementation, I can bring my many years of experience to local companies who may need a helping hand with this new policy. I don’t want to see them negatively affected due to the policy’s ability to apply government-levied monetary fees and legal penalties,” said Guidry.

Headquartered in the City of Austin, Texas Zero Waste Strategies is structured to help local businesses meet requirements for establishing on-site recycling programs, staff and tenant education training and annual report filings, among other services offered, like waste and recycling contract negotiations.

Guidry’s company is also poised to take advantage of a recent inter-local agreement struck between the City of Austin and Travis County to regionalize parts of Austin’s Zero Waste Master Plan. She also plans to extent her services throughout Central Texas and across the state to assist local governments and businesses in saving finances and material resources.

Texas Zero Waste Strategies is a registered business in Travis County and a proud Platinum member of the Austin Green Business Leaders program.
