The Bois d’Arc Chapter was awarded second place in the Exemplary Projects category at the Texas Master Naturalist Conference in Navasota.  Jacque Kyle (right) accepted the award and a $200 check for the chapter.  The conference was held at Camp Allen October 26-28, 2012.  The project displayed and presented to the judges by Connie Aplin and Jacque Kyle was the National Fossil Day event held Oct. 20, 2012 in Ladonia and at the North Sulphur River Fossil Park.

Doug Franklin, Kenny Karl, and PK Kirkpatrick of the Bois d’Arc Chapter were instrumental in planning National Fossil Day in Ladonia.  Working with Jan Cooper and Stephan Gozpecki of the Dallas Paleontological Society, they obtained speakers, fossils for display and experts in identifying fossils.  Participants were invited to bring their fossils for identification before the presentations.  PK Kirkpatrick spoke on “Fossil Hunting in the North Sulphur River” and Ladonia’s request to the Army Corps of Engineers for a new fossil park when Lake Ralph Hall is built. Doug Franklin spoke on the “History of the North Sulphur River” and Tom Dill told us “Why the North Sulphur River is Such  a Good Fossil Locality.”

Experts went to the river for fossil identification after the presentations.  Over 130 people attended National Fossil Day.  The 2013 National Fossil Day is being planned for the third Saturday in October.
