Small Mammals of the Southern Great Plains will be the topic for Second Saturday, November 10 at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.  The program begins at 10 a.m. in the refuge’s Visitor Center.

Presenting the program will be Jessica Healy, Assistant Professor of Biology at Austin College.  An Iowa native, she received a BA at Central College, where she gained extensive experience conducting small mammal surveys (from rats to bats).  She earned a PhD in Zoology at Colorado State University.

At Austin College, Dr. Healy studies the ecological physiology of hibernating mammals and is looking forward to teaching Mammalogy for the first time at AC in the spring semester.

Youngsters ages 4-10 are invited to the Second Saturday for Youth program Woo Hoo for Owls, also on November 10.  The program will be led by Katie Palmer; it begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 11:30.  There will be hands-on nature crafts and games.  Children under age 6 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.  To assure adequate supplies for each youth, advance registration is required and can be made by calling the refuge at 903-786-2826.

Also on Saturday, the Friends of Hagerman Photo Club will be meeting at 12:30 in the audiovisual classroom; the theme for sharing is “Artistic.”  All Second Saturday activities are free of charge and open to the public.  Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma.
