Students invited to tour, see recycling in action

McKINNEY, TEXAS  – The City of McKinney Environmental Education department has joined efforts with Progressive Waste Solutions (formerly IESI) to host Recycling is Fun Day on Monday, Oct. 29, which is a school holiday for the McKinney Independent School District (MISD). This event started three years ago in an effort to educate the public about the importance of recycling.

At Recycling is Fun Day, students and parents can tour the LEED-certified Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on the Progressive Waste Solutions campus during actual hours of operation to see the recycling process in action from the observation deck.

What: Recycling is Fun Day

When: Monday, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. – noon

Where: IESI- Progressive Waste Solutions, 2138 Country Lane

“We are fortunate to have Progressive Waste Solutions as a partner. Recycling conserves natural resources and saves space in the landfill. We want everyone to see what happens with recyclables after they are picked up curbside”, said Martha Cavazos Fipps, Environmental Education Coordinator.

The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring canned food for the Scare Away Hunger campaign sponsored by 3e. Parking is across the street at Simpson Strong Tie, where an electric train will transport everyone to the MRF across the street.

There will be more than twenty exhibitors, including the Collin County Master Gardeners showcasing worm composting and butterflies, Coserv promoting energy conservation in the home, and Texas A&M Agrilife Extension showing rainwater harvesting. Game booths teach water pollution prevention and other topics related to taking care of the environment will also surround the facility.
