Sherman Museum to hold 'Evening of Texana' event Nov. 8

Sherman, Texas  — The Sherman Museum announced today that its popular dramatic reading event, “Evening of Texana” will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2012 in The Sherman Museum Community Room. The public is invited to come enjoy an evening packed with Texas wit and humor, style and substance, and Lone Star literary delight. Admission to the event is free, but donations to the museum are appreciated.

The event is coordinated by Sue Malnory and sponsored by the museum. The program will entertain adults, but is not recommended for children.

Evening of Texana will feature three readings of works by Texas authors. Ginger Nye will perform the first reading, reading from Stock Show Trip Teaches Lessons in Life, by Michael L. Blackman. Margie Morris will perform the second reading. She will read from Tapioca Surprise, by William Goyen. John West will perform the evening’s final reading. His subject will be "At Play in the Sewers of the Lord," by Robert Flynn.

There will be breaks between readings when refreshments will be served. The Sherman Museum is located at 301 South Walnut in Sherman, Texas.

About the Authors

Michael Blackman earned his bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1967 and his master's from Ohio State in 1974. Since then he has worked at the Baytown Sun, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Post, New York Times, and Philadelphia Inquirer. He has also written short stories and plays which have won awards and been performed in professional theaters across the country. Blackman wrote The Golden Shadows Old West Museum, which won the Texas Institute of Letters award for Best Short Story in 1973.

Charles William Goyen (April 24, 1915 – August 30, 1983) was an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, poet, editor, and teacher. Born in a small town in East Texas, these roots would influence his work for his entire life. He was educated at Rice Institute and the University of Iowa. Goyen was married to the actress Doris Roberts for twenty years, until his death in 1983.

Robert Flynn , a native of Chillicothe, Texas and professor emeritus Trinity University, is the author of nine novels and several short story and essay collections, as well as documentaries and other works. He is also at contributor to The Door magazine. The book in which the reading appears, Living with the Hyenas, received a Western Heritage Award for the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

The Sherman Museum is a non-profit 501(c) (3) educational organization devoted to collecting, preserving and interpreting objects of historical significance to Grayson County and the Greater North Texas Region. The museum was previously known as The Red River Historical Museum prior to a name change in March 2011.
