Just weeks after launching the historic cross-border Go Red River Route expanding its bus and shuttle service into Oklahoma, TAPS Public Transit has announced that the agency will open a major park and ride facility, its largest ever, this November.

The TAPS board of directors approved a plan at its October 3 meeting to open a 1,500-square-foot passenger waiting area at Midway Mall on Texoma Parkway in Sherman. TAPS Public Transit CEO and executive director Brad Underwood said the new park-and-ride facility accommodates more than 200 vehicles in the parking area adjacent to the facility.

“The facility will provide a comfortable, climate-controlled area for transit riders and commuters who park their vehicles for the day and ride TAPS buses and shuttles to work and school,” said Underwood.

The TAPS space will have a separate entrance just south of Midway Mall’s east entrance and can also be accessed directly through the mall. The retail space at Midway Mall was formerly rented by Rex Electronics.

TAPS board of directors chair Cary Wacker said the new facility would serve both commuters and those who depend primarily on public transportation.

“The new facility greatly expands the number of customer vehicles TAPS can park during the day, and it offers commuters a comfortable place to wait,” said Wacker.

Currently, the Sherman park-and-ride lot is located at the TAPS building in Sherman at 6104 Texoma Parkway. That parking area will remain open as well, primarily for DFW Airport shuttle customers.

TAPS Public Transit operates buses and shuttles in the North Texas and Southeastern Oklahoma area providing affordable, dependable, comfortable public transportation along several fixed routes. TAPS recently launched the Go Red River Route a fixed route between Sherman, Texas and Durant, Oklahoma with departures and arrivals hourly from park and ride lots in Sherman, Denison and at Choctaw Resort & Casino.

TAPS also operates fixed route services for students, staff and faculty at Austin College in Sherman, Grayson College in Denison and Van Alstyne, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant.

This year, TAPS Public Transit began curb-to-curb shuttle service directly to DFW Airport in Grapevine on a reservation-only basis. TAPS’ TexExpress service shuttles riders from park and ride lots directly to and from the Parker Road DART station in Plano four times each day.

Citizens needing transportation for shopping, medical appointments, to attend school, or other reason can contain TAPS Public Transit to schedule a ride within the TAPS service area.
