Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge will be offering two new, limited-permit public hunts beginning in spring of 2013.  Feral hog hunts will be held March 8-10 & March 22-24 with 170 total permits available.  A month later, two wild turkey hunts will be held April 19-21 & April 26-28 with 24 total permits available.

Multiple Refuge Hunt Units will be open and hunters will be assigned to a specific unit during the drawing process.  Shotguns and bow and arrow will be allowed as hunting weapons for both species, adding muzzleloaders for hogs. For hunters choosing to use a gun, only lead free, non-toxic (steel, bismuth, copper or tungsten) shot including 00 buck for hogs and #4 shot or smaller for turkey may be used and possessed while hunting on the Refuge.  All hunters must be in compliance with State of Texas hunter education requirements. In addition, those who will be using archery equipment must have proof of completion of a bow hunter safety course. Depending on demand, one or more units may be designated as a bow hunting only unit.

As with the 2012 Archery Deer Hunt, the permit application process will be managed through a web-based system operated by the Kinsail Corporation. Hunters will be able to apply on-line for the feral hog hunt beginning November 1, 2012.  Applications for the wild turkey hunt will be accepted beginning one month later on December 1.  All hunters will have 30 days to apply, and selected hunters will be notified within a few days of the drawing. The permit website can be found beginning November 1 at www.hagermanpermits.com.  Hunters will complete the application process on-line and submit the required fee (credit cards accepted).  A non-refundable $10.00 application fee per person will be required and entries are limited to one per person.  Hunters unable to apply on-line may pick up a paper application form at the Refuge Headquarters, or print one from the hunt permit website.  Any paper forms must be sent to Hagerman NWR, c/o Kinsail Corporation, P.O. Box 7087, Arlington, VA 22207, by the deadline.  All checks, money orders, or cashier’s checks must be made out to Kinsail Corporation.

A computer program will randomly select applicants to receive permits for each separate hunt.  Successful hunters will be required to submit a $50 permit fee and a $5 permit processing fee to Kinsail.  The initial list of computer-generated names will be used in order to fill any vacant slots. Incomplete applications or those that cannot be read due to poor handwriting will not be considered in the drawing process. Applications without required fees will also be discarded.

Please contact the Refuge at (903) 786-2826 Monday through Friday 7:30-4:00 for additional details on how to apply, or other questions.
