SHERMAN, Texas — The Sherman Museum announced that it will host a special exhibition honoring Grayson County’s rich gridiron legacy. The exhibition, entitled “Grayson County Football," will be displayed October 1 through November 15, 2012. Admission for this special exhibition will be $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for youths (ages 5-18). Children under 5 are free.

Teams to be highlighted are all Grayson County high schools, including Sherman and Denison, and Austin College. In addition to the game itself, the exhibition will showcase team rivalries, band and cheer components, as well as the community spirit behind
the local team.

Grayson County’s distinguished gridiron history dates back more than a century, starting with Austin College’s first game against Texas A&M in 1896. The Sherman-Denison cross-town
contest has been played for 106 years, making it the longest running high school rivalry in Texas, and has become known as the “Battle for the Axe.”

“Football plays a profound role in our culture,” noted The Sherman Museum Director, Dan Steelman. “Generations have played the
game, cheered the players and supported their hometown team. It is part of who we are. We are pleased to honor this tradition.”

Chris Rumohr, Museum Coordinator, said that all county high schools and Austin College have been contacted and have agreed to participate to varying degrees.

“Everybody has been extremely cooperative and enthusiastic about the exhibit," stated Rumohr. "To my knowledge, there has never been an exhibit bringing all county schools together.”
